This was one of the only restaurants open in the evening when we stayed just in Pont Aven, just before the beginning of the season. Nevertheless we had a good meal (the pizza was very good) and were particularly happy to be able to sit right beside the lovely open fire.

Lunchtime in a very wet Pont Aven. Saw the sign for this place (down a passageway leading to the river.) And went in, really to get out of the rain. There is a terrace - not surprisingly unoccupied today! And a dining room overlooking the river. The menu offered salads, sandwiches and other dishes. We went for croque messieurs. These came with some nice chips (fries) and salad. Friendly welcome and quick service.Good value.

This is a gorgeous restaurant overlooking the River Aven. Although we didn't book in advance, we were lucky to be able to get a table close to the Waterwheel. The sound of the water was gorgeous. The food is excellent (I had a crepe, hubby had pork) and the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. Even though it was very busy and there was a wait for a table while we were eating, we didn't feel rushed.I would be happy to eat there again.

Les Ajoncs d'Or Hotel Restaurant

My husband and I were the only Americans staying at the hotel at the time. The French like their two star accommodations. They know they'll get a clean room and decent, although not spectacula, food. We were treated very warmly by the staff of both the hotel and restaurant (which sometimes overlapped). The menu is nothing extraordinary and similar to other coastal establishments. The seafood is very fresh.

This restaurant, like the associated small hotel, is recently under a new management that is trying to incorporate numerous improvements as quickly as possible. However, three things are already excellent: the location (an idyllic, photogenic spot on the river in the center of town), the building (also photogenic), and the food. After an amuse bouche of chicken liver terrine with fig, we split a delectable pumpkin, cheese, and cream soup with ground hazelnuts. We could not decide which of the two marvelous main dishes was best: an excellent guinea hen with Roscoff onions and red wine risotto or a monk fish with polenta and hollandaise sauce. For dessert, we split a delicious apple crepe with caramel sauce. A bottle of Chardonnay nicely complemented the meal. The waiters were gracious, helpful, and timely. We would definitely go back in the future. Note: in Brittany, it seems to be the rule that there is only one sitting so the table is yours for the night.

Sur le Pont

We have just visited this restaurant to celebrate our 31st Wedding Anniversary. We’ve not visited Pont Aven for several years now but when we had the opportunity to do so and celebrate there we jumped at the chance to make it a really special weekend. We researched the ‘best’ restaurant option from some local advice and of course T.A. and then booked our table. I called at the restaurant this morning to confirm our table and inform them of our reason for booking. On arrival, we were greeted by the same young lady who managed our reservation. Unfortunately, it all went down hill from there...... perhaps as a side effect of the owner/ chef being more interested in talking to some blonde haired woman who was part of a larger group arriving to go to some upstairs tables. After waiting almost 20mins, before being offered a drinks list, I ordered two glasses of white wine and some mineral water. The wine was served in visibly different measures and eventually the mineral water was served at room temperature from the downstairs bar.On having to get up and remonstrate the young lady from earlier took over our service and went upstairs for some chilled water. Our starters arrived and both were very tasty but perhaps needing a little extra seasoning. My only problem with the starters, mine was a choice from the 33euro table d’hote menu a stuffed courgette flower but charged at €18, €1 less than the Langoustine Ravioli. I was blissfully unaware of this as we ran into issues with our plats, resulting in my wife eating hers alone as I waited for mine to be replaced as it had been overlooked. From this moment on we were completely ignored, with not even an offer to top up our wine, complimented by a junior chef (presumably the one who over cooked my monkfish) glaring at me, eye to eye on his way UP and DOWN the stairs to change prior to leaving. On asking for the bill I was a little bemused to see that we had been charged for the full amount despite the overall extremely disjointed/disappointing experience, and I asked to speak to the owner / manager. On arrival the man was extremely negative and said that he did not speak any English. Frederick his name I later discovered then continued to speak in more rapid spoken French. I apologised for my limited ability to communicate fully in French and asked that he spoke a little slower. After outlining some of our issues he said in English “ You Don’t Like, Fine OK just GO” and walked off. We were left alone and ignored for some minutes, before getting up to leave. At this point Frederick shouted at us at the doorway we must pay despite the problems.I explained that I had no problem with paying but I did have an issue with dining separately to my wife on a special occasion to which he said “pas de problem” and actually threatened to call the Police. I told Frederick to please continue to do so as I would be very happy to speak with them.He then continued to speak in very rapid French accompanied by his frequent outbursts in English to deny any of the problems where within his control. At this point I decided that there was not going to be a resolution with this man to our satisfaction so I just settled our account and left thinking that for us in gastronomic terms... What a very sad night for Pont Aven. NEVER AGAIN...

Dropped in for lunch (on the back of good TripAdvisor reviews) after visiting the Museum. The setting is charming: yards behind the High Street but just over a babbling stream and reached via a wooden decking pathway. Had to sit outside which was no problem weather-wise and the smokers on the next table soon departed. All 5 of us had a simple pasta course plus ice cream etc which was universally well received. The cooking is straightforward (like the menu) and very competent. Service from the young Venetian waitress (an excellent linguist) was perfectly attentive and everyone eventually departed very satisfied.

La Taupiniere

Reviewed By donnaso

My husband and I spend a month in Paris every year. La Taupiniere, just outside the tiny town of Pont Aven in Brittany, is as good as the very best restaurants we have dined at in Paris. The setting is lovely, in a small house on a quiet road. The welcome is warm and inviting. The two dining rooms are quietly elegant. And the food is beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. The table service is attentive with no pretension. We rarely find the need to question a wine but we thought our first selection might have turned. The host tasted and felt that while the wine was not spoiled it had lost some of the attributes that make it special. He offered to change it for us, without hesitation. This was the right thing to do but it was done with exceptional grace and good humor. In short, nothing could have been better. Dinner here is expensive though not outrageous and we felt the price was fully justified by the quality. We hope to have another chance to dine at La Taupiniere.
