Visited this restaurant last Saturday on a trip to Cardiff. The place was buzzing and had a great atmosphere. It's only small, so booking is essential on Saturdays and I would imagine that other weekend evenings are equally busy. The menu is small but with the additional specials board, there's something for everyone. I had a great prawn starter with a calzone type pizza for the main course, both were excellent. The tiramisu desert was the best i've eaten in a restaurant. All the staff were helpful and friendly and the service slick and professional. I will definitely book again next time we're in Cardiff, this place is a real gem!

Surely chain restaurants aren't meant to be this good? This one is, the food is exemplary, near faultless all round. There was a great variety of dishes between the four of us and the only thing going back to the kitchen were empty plates. The wine list has a great choice, we went for a bottle of fizz, a lovely Cremate de Bourgogne, and a delicious Pinot Noir, probably the best Pinot Noir I have tasted for a few years. This was a truly memorable meal. Staff all knew their food and their wine and were polite and helpful to a fault. The place has a pleasant buzz to it with a feel of a cosy French Bistro. Lovely.

Good Italian food - but on the evening we ate there the restaurant seemed seriously understaffed. We waited an hour before being served, and then our main course arrived before the starters. The waiters were apologetic and were doing their best - it wasn't their fault - but this understaffing, on an evening which was predictably busy, made our experience less good than it should have been.

My husband and I went there last night for my birthday meal. Highly reccommend. It was extremely busy for a Tuesday night and sadly there was no duck left BUT apart from this we couldn't fault anything. A lovely meal, good portion sizes, good and prompt service and reasonably priced. We finished our drinks outside with a great view towards Cardiff. A very pleasant evening.

We booked for their sharing steak platter with two friends last week. The Exchange Hotel where the restaurant is situated is a fantastic old building with an enormous amount of history and ambience - well worth a look around on your visit!I was a little worried when we arrived just after 7 for a 7.30pm booking and the place was empty. However, we were greeted by the friendly barman and head waiter, who served us some great drinks as we sat at the bar. As we were having the sharing steak platter which we were advised our meal would take around 40 minutes to prepare. We ordered some sharing nibbles of the menu which arrived tasty and was readily consumed. We looked at the wine menu, and had some great tips provided by the waiter - which proved to be an excellent decision! The place gradually started to fill up and was getting fairly busy as the evening drew on.The food was excellent - the rib-eye steak was delicious and tender and cooked perfectly. The waiter was attentive, friendly and not pushy and gave us plenty of time between courses. The desserts were great to, as was a glass of port to finish the meal. All in all it was an excellent meal, and excellent venue and a very pleasant dining experience. We'd definitely go back for another meal there. Highly recommended.Hi,Simon thank you very much for your 5 star review, glad you enjoyed our steak sharer and service from my staff, I will let my staff know about your lovely review towards them, hope to see you soon again to try our other dishes from our ala carte menuThanks

The food was absolutely amazing - tasted as good as it looked. Not a huge choice, about 6 starters, mains and desserts but everything was delicious. Wines reasonably priced. Very simply decorated room, immaculately clean. Friendly waiter. Good choice of background music.

I donât know what previous reviewers are writing about when they mention poor service....unless they expect the staff to be mind readers. You know what they say, if you donât ask, you donât get. Having said that, we didnât have to ask for anything, it was offered. The food was excellent, probably the best fillet steak Iâve had in a long time. The staff were attentive without being too overbearing, which for us is just what we want.Overall, it was a great experience.........thanks.

My wife and I were fortunate to receive a gift from our daughter of a Chefs Table dining experience. We arrived slightly before 7pm on a Saturday night and were greeted by James himself. James was welcoming and engaging, asking for our name and immediately identified that we were there for the Chefs Table. James took our coats and asked us to take a seat in the waiting area. Two wonderful glasses of champagne were rapidly presented to us to enjoy until our âtableâ was ready. We were asked about any likes/dislikes or allergies by Katrin (apologies if Iâve got that wrong), who was lovely. Throughout the night she spoke to us on a few occasions, but was primarily front of house. We were collected by James, who walked us into the kitchen and showed us to the Chefs Table, which in actual fact was a bar type area at the head of the kitchen with bar chairs, giving an excellent view of the whole kitchen and prep areas. We were introduced to the kitchen staff/chefs by James, and hopefully I have their names correct, Georgina, Joel, Chris and Joe. All were very friendly, and engaging and answered any questions that we threw at them, silly or otherwise. The Chefs Table is a 14 course menu, and covers all course types and food groups. We decided to pair the courses with wine which is optional (at an extra cost). We decided on the nine course pairing. We were introduced to George, our sommelier for the evening, who was wonderful. George explained each wine, itâs producer, region and the reason why he had chosen that particular wine to go with the courses being served. Each course was prepared in our view, and presented by the chef preparing it. Each explained how the dish was made and explained all aspects of the dish and itâs contents. Now at this point Iâm not going to reveal what we actually had, as I would not want to take away the theatre of the presentation on the night should any of you choose to do the Chefs Table, but be rest assured, the food served and presented to us was exceptional! The whole evening lasts a little over 3hrs, and at no point were we rushed to continue onto the next course. James explained at the outset that the food does come quite quickly, but stated that if we wanted to take a break between courses, then we should just let the chefs know, preferably one course in advance. Having watched many professional kitchens on television depicted as places of stress, shouting, sweating, swearing and any other s I could imagine, Sommerinâs is nothing like it! The staff work in a friendly, light hearted yet professional manner. There is no shouting, as each chef is aware of what is going on, and works their stations with complete control. This appears to be a happy environment to work in, although at times extremely busy, with orders coming in rapidly throughout the service. All in all this was an excellent experience, in a restaurant run by one of the UKâs best Chefs.Would I go again? In a heartbeat. Although we were treated to a behind the scenes look at the kitchen, Iâm pretty sure that the front of house experience is equally memorable! To James and all the Staff, a very big thank you for a wonderful evening. We shall return.
