Me and my friend came for a quick late night dinner had a few nibbly bits etc.. which tasted amazing!We were politely served by a gentlemen we heard named Kealan and a young happy and polite waiter called George who was happy and smiling and took care when removing and placing our plates from the table as it was quite a squeeze where it was a very busy evening! El Toro is one of those restaurants that often people recommend in Portsmouth and I was surprised I hadn't been sooner myself. I love myself a steak dinner and its my 'go to' meal if we are out and treating ourselves to a 'nice' meal. I booked a table online because I was conscious of the fact so many people had been, I didn't want to turn up on the evening and find they couldn't seat us, especially as it was for my boyfriend's birthday- Turns out it was quite quiet and a booking wasn't really necessary but glad I took the precaution nonetheless. We were welcomed warmly and taken to a table that wasn't so warm. I could feel the air con right on us so decided to leave my jacket on but it didn't bother me too much. Myself and my boyfriend both order an 8oz Sirloin steak with steak cut chips cooked medium rare. Our meals came out really quickly which was great as I was really looking forward to it because of all the recommendations. I don't want to say I was disappointed because the food tasted lovely, cooked to our requirements and couldn't fault it but couldn't help but have the feeling of ' I've had better' . Maybe I should have chosen a different cut of meat? I can't put my finger on it , I just wasn't overwhelmed by my meal, the chips were really good and I really enjoyed my cocktail. I chose sticky toffee pudding as a desert which was truly delicious and my boyfriend had the cheesecake ( the waitress had to find out the flavour which was being served that day which was a little surprising as expected her to know but thought she may be new?) I believe the flavour was caramel and pear which he enjoyed very much.I would like to come back and experience something else as I know they often have different offers and deals on at different times and would like to return to give it another review. Visited solo when down for work. Firstly, the 2 staff were very pleasant. The beer menu is excellent. Several Belgian beers on tap and a great range of around 100 bottled beers. The food was excellent. Prawn, chorizo and halluomi kebabs! Huge pork belly for main course. What a place this is. Well recommend and will be back if I'm in Southsea again.

Absolutely lovely food. Generous sized portions, fairly priced. We shared a halloumi starter, and had a main course each.The lamb baba ganoosh and shish was beautiful. The sauces and salads that accompanied it were lovely. Nice atmosphere and really helpful, friendly waiter. Thankyou for a nice dining experience. X

Such a friendly welcoming restaurant, the food was amazing . Highly recommend to vegetarians . Very tasty and wide variety of dishes . The staff were so helpful and friendly, even to the point of complementary drinks and a birthday cake presented when they found out it was a member of the groups birthday. From the outside the North Star looks like a typical large town pub. Inside itâs another world. Crisp scarlet table cloths and white linen napkins make for a smart restaurant setting. The service is friendly and efficient while the tapas are fantastic. We ordered from the set lunch menu which meant that the four of us could have a total of twelve tapas. We ordered one each of the ten tapas on the menu with double helpings of the whitebait and meatballs. Everything was freshly cooked, was served at the same time and everything was delicious. The house wine was good and the bill remarkably reasonable for the amount and quality of the food which we had had. Some of the best tapas that Iâve had and we will definitely return.

This was our 3rd time at the restaurant and it never fails to disappoint. The food was exquisite, the service outstanding and the whole experience means it will continue to be our number one place to go for special occasions such as our anniversary as it was this week. We went to Bistro Monparnasse for a special Birthday celebration on 14th September. The restaurant was busy and every table had been booked, no surprise for a Saturday evening. You select where you would like to sit on arrival, depending on what is available for your booking number. The restaurant has a lovely ambience and, despite being full, was not noisy at all. As we were seated the waitress brought us a chive and cream cheese (minI) muffin and a paprika biscuit with goats cheese filling - these were lovely. We were asked if we would like drinks so ordered a peach champagne cocktail each. The waitress then provided a bread basket for us to choose (as much as we would like) we had one piece each of a herb bread and a walnut and raisin bread (so good!). The service was very brisk, which would be my only criticism (and hence why I did not give it 5 stars). We had barely started our cocktails when our starters arrived. We both had seared scallops, which were divine. During our starters the wine we had ordered arrived, even though we had still barely touched our cocktails. Our starters were collected and we continued to sip our cocktails. All too soon, our mains arrived, so we had to drink red wine and cocktails, not ideal. We both had the Lamb which, again, was superb. The presentation, attention to detail and the flavours were sensational. This is very high quality food at a very reasonable price. We were too full for puddings, which looked gorgeous. My advice would be to ask for slower service, unless you like your food to be delivered quickly between starters, mains and puddings.I will definitely return but will be a bit forewarned with the need to delay the speed of service.

Visited this restaurant once before and wanted to come back. Returned with friends and the welcome was fantastic. The employees in this restaurant are so attentive and the service is brilliant. A very extensive menu with lots of choice including tapas. The food is so beautiful and colourful and the flavours are delicious. It is a busy restaurant so I would recommend to book, this is probably because once you have visited this independent business you will definitely will want to come back.
