The crispy and tasty pizza in De Haan, large choice of ingredients and a relaxed atmosphere make the place a must visit when you had enough of sea fruits and boulettekes. Also decent cocktails are prepared and served, surely a plus!

Bistro De Kruidenmolen

After having had some bad experiences on the seafront we decided to go inland for a meal this time and it definitely was a great decision. This place is mostly visited by locals and very busy, most tables are taken twice per night. We were served some homemade crisps and had a tasty cocktail maison to start off with. We had fish / meat as a main and the portions were of a normal size and very very tasty. The deserts were absolutely wonderful (and I am usually not a desert person). The staff was very friendly, the service fairly fast and the bill absolutely ok for what you get. We will most certainly go back there.

Bistro Villa Julia

Dined at Julia on a Friday evening in January when the restaurant was reasonably full for off-season. The Flemish menu was well-described to us German and English speaking folks. I would describe the meals as "hearty" - certainly more than a couple of retired seniors like us could eat. Service was decent. From appertifs to espressos (yes, they have decaf), we were there about 3 hours. Clearly a great choice if you are hungry!

Nice little restaurant, app. 20 cts., which allows the chef to give a perfect service. We went on a Friday, there's only a set menu (number of courses can be chosen) and were pleasantly surprised by all appetizers and dishes. Cooked to perfection and marvelous presentation. We especially appreciated the cod and the St. Jacques. The venisson was a real treat. Winelist is a pleasant surprise as well. Very friendly, Public parking in front of the restaurant.

Restaurant Le Kok sur Mer

Having read many positive comments about this place, I booked a table for 3 to celebrate my birthday. Our table for 3 turned out to be table for 2 featuring an extra plate on one of the remaining table sides. Maximising revenue, rather than accommodating guests you could say. Forcing your guests to move stuff from the table to the windowsill in order to have an acceptable dinner setting, who cares.Staff were very friendly and service extremely speedy. Too speedy, perhaps ...In the mean time, I had noticed my wine glass was not the same as my wife's. Is this a capital error, you may ask. Perhaps not, but details matter. The biggest service setback had still to come. I had ordered a 2014 wine from the wine list. It was not until a bit later I noticed the bottle showed 2015 instead. Was this a deliberate 'mistake' or was the wine list wrong ? I chose not to address the hostess in the crowded restaurant and I now realize I should have. Was the wine dreadful ? No, it was not, but not giving me what I had ordered and what was officially in the wine list, without telling me, did not add trust to our transaction. In the mean time, starters had arrived and apart from the undetermined taste in my wife's plate, I started wondering where the issue was in mine. Was the lobster too tough or was my knife blunt ? Awkward.Luckily, the main courses and desserts were excellent. Nothing to add here. All in all, my high expectations suffered a serious blow from the start and the wine issue did not help me to recover.I have plenty of restaurant visits to compare with and unfortunately this one will not make it to my return list.

L'Esperance

A fantastic dining experience for my partner and myself. From the time we entered to the time we left everything was so perfect. This is a very small personal, intimate restaurant owned by the chef who clearly prides himself in his work. On arrival we were invited to sit at the chefs table where we could view all the dishes being prepared for our gourmet dinner. Quite fascinating, everything was so orderly and calm. Our waiter went to great lengths to translate and describe all the dishes. Following a very delicate amuse-bouche; from the 3 or 4 course menu we chose the sea bass, the guinea fowl, then either the cheese board or the chefs special desert. All beautiful cooked and presented. The waiter also suggested a limited edition Belgian Chardonnay that went very well with our meal.On leaving the chef personally retrieved our coats and was pleased to know that we enjoyed both his food and our evening. Full marks and highly recommended. It follows advanced booking is essential.

Othello

Wanting to take pictures of the magnificent sunset on Ostend’s waterfront, we diverted from our usual route of turning right onto the promenade and turned left instead, towards the sun. We were looking for somewhere to eat and found this charming little restaurant called Othello. We were given some very tasty tapenade and fresh bread as a taster to begin with, as standard to have with our drinks. Then onto the starter. To say that the scallops I had were the most delicious and tender I’ve ever had would be an understatement. They were utterly superb. We then went onto mussels in white wine for me, and beef for my husband. The mussels were divine, and my husband reports that the meat was really tender and tasty.Dessert was Creme Brûlée for him and ice cream for me. Both absolutely delicious. We would highly recommend this restaurant. It would be advisable to book ahead. We had not booked, and they did accommodate us, but it was full. An absolute gem of a find and we would come again. It is pricey, but we don’t mind paying for quality. For drinks and three courses each the bill amounted to about €120.00.The service was good too and the owners very attentive. Given that the position of the restaurant is a little bit away from the main thoroughfare, it was full nevertheless, and worthy of walking just that little but further west to find it. There is a step up from the pavement, but if someone were being pushed in a wheelchair I think the wheelchair could be lifted up the step. One couple had a little dog with them who had its own seat. They allow well behaved dogs into restaurants in Belgium. Not sure if they all do, but I’ve noticed a number of them seem to allow it.
