Things to do in Borba
Not worth the stretch. The owner may be a good chef, but then again... so-called sophisticated gastronomy cooked 2 or 3 days before. Well
We had various lunches and petiscos in this restaurant. Every choice was very very tasty, great wine and excellent service.Strongly recommend if you are nearby to taste real Alentejo.

On the way back to Lisbon from Merida, stopped for lunch in Borba. Couldn't find anywhere attractive on the main road so consulted TA and found this place was close to the main Adega. Despite having the map and address to put in the GPS, we couldn't see anything that looked like a restaurant, so had to ask a local, who pointed to an anonymous looking doorway up some steps in a row of houses. On looking through the glass door, we saw the name and a large representation of a woodsaw, confirming we were in the right place. Later we found out that if a restaurant had an external sign that could be read from 25 m. away then they had to pay a large additional fee on the licence. We wondered if this applied to the Adega which had letters nearly two meters high painted on the walls. The dining room was like a front room of a house next to a small bar and till at the entrance. A few tables were occupied by locals. The owner was doing all the serving, and was quietly efficient though looking a little harassed. The food on offer was standard Portuguese with generous size and freshly cooked. The local olives, crusty bread and a fine extra virgin olive oil from a local producer were all very good. Having been in meat-loving Spain for the weekend we opted for grilled garoupa and salmon steaks although one of our party couldn't resist the grilled mixed meat which was mainly pork and chicken, but very generous portions. The chips and boiled vegetables were freshly prepared and hot, and it was a good cheap lunch. I won't hesitate to stop there next time I pass.

What a wonderful dining experience! We were with a group and had the tasting menu. The service was outstanding as was the food. Creative presentation and great taste. What more could you ask for? The hotel and dining room are lovely - modern, understated elegance.

We did not book and luckily secured the last table....the restaurant is small but delightful inside. Service was very slow but once your turn came for ordering it was OK. The owner was very knowledgeable about the food being served and the wines; mostly from his own family estate. We were able to try the wines before making a choice. The food was very good and we enjoyed the whole experience!

The owner of the B&B where we stayed (Rita and João) suggested us this restaurant nearby. Isabella (the cook) prepares typical Portuguese meal. Tasty, very generous and yet very affordable. We missed some of the speciality (the rabbit among others) recommended by our hosts. However, we had excellent comfort food.Isabella is especially charming. You can trust her cooking.

The friendly family-run O Espiga carried out the local tradition of serving simple dishes of excellent quality in huge portions at low prices to perfection. It's certainly not the prettiest restaurant you'll visit in your life but you're sure to have a good experience here thanks to the friendly staff (fire up your Google translate though unless your Portuguese is fluent) and the heaps of delicious fresh fish that's being served.

Don't let the old Pepsi-sign outside fool you. Or the not so up to date interior design. We dined here twice and enjoyed simple and really delicious meals as well as good very personal service. My husband claims the meat was one of top three ever. Great local Alentejo wines added to the experience.

Really cannot recommend highly enough. We were looked after by a lovely lady who ran through the menu with us. We had a delicious tomato soup with interesting bits of cured meats and crisped pork rinds. Then the chicken and rabbit dishes. Both stewed, slightly crisped from the oven and both full of flavour. That came with fried potatoes and a large fresh salad. We also drank a local white wine for â¬8 which tasted blind I would of paid â¬30 for and still would of been happy. The lady then kindly let us 3 local spirits to taste. Amazing hospitality to first time diners. The price of all this? â¬31!!! Go there.
