Samarkand (Uzbek Latin: Samarqand; Uzbek Cyrillic and Tajik: Самарқанд; Persian: سمرقند; Russian: Самарканд; Greek: Σαμαρκάνδη), alternatively Samarqand, is a city in modern-day Uzbekistan and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. There is evidence of human activity in the area of the city from the late Paleolithic era, though there is no direct evidence of when exactly Samarkand was founded; some theories propose that it was founded between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Prospering from its location on the Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean, at times Samarkand was one of the greatest cities of Central Asia.
Things to do in Samarkand
Iâm a big lover of Armenian cuisine, so was happy to bump into this place. By that time, my Uzbek trip lasted for weeks, and I wouldnât mind some change in food experience.Dary Kavkaza («Gifts of Caucasus») is a very simple café, located right opposite the Roman Catholic Cathedral at the beginning of long Mahmood Qoshgariy Street. This part of town is known as âRussianâ, so regular short-term travelers to Samarkand often miss it. But once you are there, this café is hard to walk by, especially when you are hungry. Fine smell of burning wood or shashlik cooking will just drag you there. The interior is cheap and not at all inviting, and hand-washing facilities are even discouraging. I preferred to sit outdoors: the street wasnât busy, and the tables were separated from the pedestrian area by some greenery. It was nice to watch the cook doing magic around mangal (shashlik-making facility). But when the wind changed, the smoke made my eyes water â thereâs no air extraction system in their basic mangal. A hungry cat has immediately made me company and was very demanding and persistent. And even on the street there was no escape from the loud music, mostly pop-songs. So the atmosphere was more of a grab-and-go/street cafe. I ordered lavash (flat thin bread) with dried cheese and herbs rolled in it, baked vegetables salad and, of course, shashlik (chicken one) with hot spicy home-made sauce. Traditional Uzbek bread was served, too. Sadly, they didnât have any traditional Armenian soft drinks. The food was all fresh and really good, if not excellent. Lavash with cheese was tender and rightly balanced in ingredients. Shashlik, also served in lavash, was very juicy, and its pieces were big enough. But this resulted in nearly the largest lunch bill Iâve seen during my Uzbek travels. Considering absence of ambience and lack of attentive service as well as cheap and uncomfortable sitting, it came as a surprise and even with such good food wasnât quite justified. I still recommend this café, if you like Armenian cuisine. Just be aware that it is not as cheap as its «looks» may suggest.

I was with friends from Spain. At the expense of the kitchen there are no questions, everything is very tasty. The veranda on the 3rd floor is beautiful, in the evening there is a pleasure there, there is also a bar and there they serve branded cocktails and alcoholic drinks. Friends also liked it very much, both the place and the food. The price for a restaurant is very acceptable, for four person it will be an average of 300 thousand soums total. Highly recommend!!!

For the first time in the city of Samarkand opened a restaurant of the European level "Green Bear Bar". This is a revolutionary bar restaurant art of our city, combining the advantages of a noisy bar and a fashionable restaurant, where it is nice to sit i
The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating. The terrace is very special and the music creates a nice atmosphere. One waiter spoke perfect English and was very friendly. Snacks and drinks were served very quick. But even though the restaurant had few guests, we waited nearly one hour before the main course was served. Finally, in two different meals, the beef was cook too much. A pity because the quality of he meat was good. The best selection was the home brewed beer. So, itâs a good option to go for drinks and snacks only - like the name suggests.

We visited the restaurant as part of an organized tour. The menu included salad, pumpkin soup, shashrik and apple pie, which were all good. In our case, the children's birthday party was taking place downstairs and the sound did not bother us at all. After dinner, we had a peek at the party and took the photo of the children enjoying the event.

We decided to have couple of beers after our hectic day long trip at Samarkand. Tripadvisor showed up blues cafe as the go to joint. Choices of beer are limited. They have one Russian and 2 other beers. Even quantity of Russian beer was limited. We ordered that to taste something new. We ordered khachapuri for food. Though it took almost half an hour to bring the food but it tasted awesome. Me and my friends finished it with in minutes. Cafe wasn't that much costly if I remember well.
