Mom's Cafe

For many years my wife and I have been vacationing for 2 weeks each September in Sooke,BC (on Vancouver Island),and we can look back to many great breakfasts, lunches and dinners at " Mom's Cafe' ".But since a change in ownership, this Diner has lost something. It's hard to put a finger on it.It definitely needs a guiding hand; somebody (owner ?),who can organize and synchronize the wait- and kitchen staff. The very friendly waitresses are rushing from table to table, the kitchen is crawling with cooks, yet it takes 45min. for a hamburger or a soup to arrive, with only 4 tables occupied. Our waitress was flat out, telling newly arrived customers, that they can pick any table (even though a sign by the door says so),taking orders, serving food & drinks, cleaning up and processing credit cards. Some of these jobs, incl. taking the garbage out and the quick-cleaning of the washrooms should be done by a dedicated person,in exchange for less tables to serve. This Diner needs streamlining. Then there is the time-wasting gossiping between the waitresses and some locals.I fully understand, that a friendly exchange is all part of a Diner's ambience, but it should not interfere with the job of the waitresses.Like gossiping for 10min ++,while ready to serve meals are getting cold in the kitchen,or drying up under heat lamps. Then they always seem to run out of some menu items early.During our last visit it was their "famous Salmon Chowder" and the meatloaf. No more all-day breakfast. No more pies. Some menu items only after 4.00pm (dinner menu). The menu offers the usual Diner's fare: soups, salads, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, etc. and some lunch favourites.Food was nothing special. Just o.k. And too expensive for what you get.To my experience, buying a restaurant for investment and then leave it to the employees to run, rarely works.Parking is limited, but there is additional parking on the side streets. If you are looking for reasonably priced, freshly prepared meals,all-day breakfast and great ambience, stop at Cathy's Corner Cafe', located at the main intersection.Unfortunately only open from 6.00am to 3.00pm. Heading out On the Pacific Marine Circle Route from Victoria we had breakfast in Sooke (45 minute drive). Other restaurants are suggested in travel brochures and this place should be on that list. It’s a no frills cafe with really fresh, really great breakfast. They also serve lunch. Limited outdoor seating where dogs are allowed.

We were thrilled to see Cathy was back. Place was updated with new lights and what not. Cathy as always was super busy but we don't mind the wait. Had a great half benny and my hubby had an enormous omelette. Prices are excellent and the food is always great. Very happy.
