Essen began in the mid-9th century as home to a women's abbey, then during the Renaissance became an important coal mining town and later a major steel production center. The famed metal-working Krupp family opened their first foundry here in 1810. One of Essen's most interesting places is the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, once the largest colliery in the world. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts 800,000 visitors a year, often hosting art exhibitions and performances.

Since we were visiting Essen, we looked online for a restaurant recommendation there. The menu itself was like opening a small book with their dishes and beverages. I mention that because laminated menus tell me the food never changes. The food at Farbenfroh changes with the seasons, with a special menu changing weekly. It was hard to choose because everything looked so good. We ended up ordering the 3 course menu with wine pairings. Everything was delicious and a feast for the eyes. The food was wonderful, the wines paired deliciously. All the wines were from German wineries. The pinot noir was a very pleasant surprise. As it turned out one of the owners, Katie, helped us with our choices, while her partner Izzettin prepares all the food with an extra dose of love. We both had the Polenta with Lentils and Pomegranate, Stuffed Potatoes with 'Shrooms and Kale, and we both tried different desserts. All of the courses had a balance of textures and flavours. Although full, we finished our amazing desserts. I recommend the chocolate cake with crunchy caramel ice cream. All dishes had lovely presentations. The restaurant has a quiet ambiance (you can't hear the conversation at the next table), it's relaxed and casual.Thank you very much.It was nice to meet you.Hope to see you soon.

We stopped here for a birthday treat during a road trip across Germany and Belgium, the food was nice but nothing special but the place itself is awesome inside, it's very reasonably priced and the cocktails are gorgeousthere's play areas for younger kids and arcade machines for older ones as well as an outdoor play area

We were here couple of times. The burgers offered are of varied range and one can have both veg as well as non-veg option with all of their burger style which is quite good. Veg patty is really delicious and is fresh. Buns are fresh and crispy. The place is quite spacious, so not so cosy. The service was quite good, servers are very polite and helpful and speaks english as well. They have variety of drinks including good german and belgian beers. The place can be full sometimes so one should reserve just in case.

We went there for a family event and we couldn t have found a more suitable, friendly place, relaxed with honest and excellent food served by very friendly, personal and attentive service. Every dish was served "Ã point". My Schnitzel would win every "Schnitzel-Test" and all the other meals looked so delicious that we need to come back soon to get more of this super tasty food.I especially like the styling of this small, casual chic and cosy restaurant which hits the taste of time. The hosts were absolutely professional and very friendly with attention to detail. As Aperitiv we had a wonderful drink called "Schiffer s Brause", that contained Prosecco with Lime and another ingredient, lovely decorated with some Rosemary.Werden, this little market town and part of Essen with it s "Fachwerk" traditional houses does already have some very good restaurants, mainly Italian. It definitely need a new restaurant like "Schiffer s" with very authentic, superb German cuisine. For a warm Summer evening there is space in the backyard for "al fresco dining" outside.Highly recommended!

...the interior was satisfying at best (not "very good" as four points would imply) and the presentation of the dishes not necessarily what one would call haute cuisine. Don't get me wrong, liked the taste of most of the tapas fair enough and the service surely was friendly, but this would justify a 3,5 ratio at best, with a stronger tendency towards "satisfying" rather than being "very good". Still recommendable to visit, although not a place to show off.
