Having read the very good reviews for this restaurant, myself and a group of 5 friends had dinner here on a Saturday evening. As the prices were what one would expect to pay in an upmarket restaurant, our expectations were high. The maitre d raved about the mussel starter - which we all had. It reminded me of those frozen crumbed mussels one finds in the freezer section of any supermarket. We complained that they were greasy and the only comment we got was "I'll tell chef. It was not mentioned again. The kingklip at R180 wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. There didn't seem to be any effort at presentation and as the plate was rather small the food was just unceremoniously plonked on it. I got the distinct impression that this was an amateur cook rather than a trained chef.The dessert was nice but certainly not fine dining.I would not rush back to this restaurant . R700 per couple excluding wine

Catharina's at Steenberg Estate has undergone a metamorphosis in name and in Chef. Tryn was apparently the name by which Catharina Raas was known. The previous chef was very good as a chef from as far as a quality gourmet menu is concerned but the choice of dishes on the menu did not meet the wishes of potential diners.The maestro behind the stove now is none other than Kerry Kilpin who has put Bistro 1682 at Steenberg on the foodie top list in the Constantia area.There is the same menu for lunch and for dinner but the choice enables one to have a relatively light meal, as my wife and I did today, or a main meal of the day should one so wish.My wife had succulent tempura prawns to start while I chose scallops, which were again succulent, accompanied by cumin fritters and the sauces that one might expect from Kerry Kilpin. We both followed these dishes with Caesar salads. I finished my meal with a tasty namalaka.We ate outside on the terrace facing False Bay on a perfect Western Cape Spring day.We are looking forward to returning for dinner on a suitable occasion.Dear 880Paddy, thank you for your very detailed review of your experience at our new restaurant, Tryn. Is this the way that Groot Constantia try and milk people for MONEY!!!!!! You can't enjoy the bottle of wine you bought with a cheese platter in their Simon's Restaurant...... You have to buy the wine there at R75 more than the tasting room.... What a shame ...... You are obviously only interested in the international guest and not our local plebs..... This is the last time we will support YOU!!!!!! I'm ashamed to know you associated with people like Simon's Restaurant that steal money from the innocent people of SOUTH AFRICA.

Our Wine Appreciation Group enjoyed a most delicious lunch in Cucina Labia's Drawing Room. The tables were set out immaculately, the food was well prepared and beautifully presented and the ambience exceptional..I could not fault any aspect of our visit. The Manageress, Lydia, was kind and considerate and bent over backwards to accommodate all our needs. The service was excellent.Full marks Cucina Labia - this praise is well-deserved.

We booked this restaurant a few days before our arrival as quite close to our accommodation and appeared to offer interesting menu choices. Traveled on dark country roads to reach this small village parade of shops and restaurants.We asked to move table as that offered was slightly away from main diners by colder window. There is a 7 course tasting menu or 5 course dinner menu- we chose the latter as did not like a couple of dishes on tasting menu and could choose what we wanted.Each dish was presented nicely and staff explained the constituents. All were tasty and we each had different items so could try each other.Service was a bit sporadic-not always same waiter and sometimes appeared slow.The restaurant on Friday eve was busy but not full. People seem to eat early so we were one of last to leave having arrived about 7-40.Having just arrived to the area price seemed great compared to what we would expect to pay back home- at least 50% difference favorable.Hi Phil,Thanks for taking the time to write a review, I'm glad you enjoyed your time spent with us!Kind regards,Glen

This is truly a hidden Gem in Hout bay. i took my fiance for supper at this fine restaurant last night and her remarks were : we must go there again. Superb Service, great Ambiance not crowded at all. I left there very happy. The meat was great. The soft music and the dimming of the lights also added to the good feel. Quentin, thank you for your hospitality and the excellent food.

Food is very good an well priced.Place is small and crowded and it was difficult to get a table as it is very popular.We found it very noisy and it was difficult tp have a conversation. We found the establishment to be on the shabby side but perhaps that is the intent - service and welcome was poor and the food very average poorly constructed fare. Ambience just on a street overlooking a railway line - disappointing offering and the coffee poor.

A favourite restaurant of mine and food,presentation,wine and service were,as usual,high class.mAybe we picked an unfortunate day because there was hardly anybody in the restaurant which is very unusual.Hope this was just a blip and for sure it is not a reflection on the quality of both food and service here.
