Reviews on Contemporary food in Leiden, South Holland Province, The Netherlands. Home to the Netherlands’ oldest university and the birthplace of Rembrandt, Leiden also served as a several-year stop-off between England and the New World for America’s Pilgrim fathers in the early 17th century. Today, lovely Leiden boasts the second-largest Dutch city center after Amsterdam. The National Museum of Antiquities has an impressive collection of Egyptian artifacts. This vegetarian and pescatarian restaurant has nice ambience on the wide Stille Rijn canal. A tea and cake on the benches st the front allow you to watch the procession of pleasure boats in the summer, but dwindling in number as temperatures drop. The Gulpener IPA is a nice appetizer and the Sicilian Pinot Grigio was zesty. This time we had dinner, with a mackerel salad starter, and some spinach soup. Both were tasty without being stunning. The fish of the day was perfectly cooked on a bowl of pasta puttanesca was similarly hearty. It was home cooked food, good ingredients but lacking in a chefs touch and something a bit extra to say it was worth the money. The deserts were lacking in choice and disappointingly no fruit flavoured options which given the season was surprising. But if it is a meat fest you want, this is not for you.

I very much enjoyed my coffee here. I was impressed that downstairs was open to people with very young children (Leiden could definitely use places like this). My only complaint was the number of individuals working on their laptops upstairs - there were so many of them, and they made it very clear they felt non-working visitors were disturbing them, even to the extent that they were pulling tables towards themselves and preventing people from sitting down in a crowded space. Inappropriate on the weekends. We decided not to have lunch here after all due to the obvious hostility from the laptop workers.

open early...serves breakfast till five..till FIVE! that's RIGHT sleep in and you won't miss a beat...but let's get down to the meat...or salmon, actually...the meat in this case is bacon on a wonderful piece of thick toast...accompanied by 2 perfectly poached eggs and smothered in, maybe(and i've eat this dish around the world, but mostly in the san francisco area. hundreds of times) the best hollandaise sauce i've ever tasted...thick, but not TOO...and that hint of lemon is there. the service was flawless and the atmosphere casual...and the price was undeniably reasonable...i can't believe i waited as long as i did to check it out...the last few establishments on this corner folded after a bit..i just thought this would do the same... SO glad it didn't...

Usually I don’t eat in restaurants attached to hotels as my perception that they could be overpriced and with small choice of dishes. Although in Netherlands it doesn’t really matter as everything is expensive here and choice usually small in any restaurant in the city. So I’ve decided to stay for dinner in hotel where arrived after a very long trip. I was really looking forward for their 3 course menu for the price of 25€ which is pretty reasonable. I liked their menu consisting from green pea soup, grilled dorado/bream and fried bananas. That was I really needed on the cold evening! That was very good-see pictures! I felt like in 5 star restaurant! I’m not a big fan of sophisticated food but sometimes you must treat yourself!:-) So portions were exactly not to overeat but feel satisfied, taste and appearance were great and I didn’t regret at all! They also brought bread and butter/olive oil/pepper sauce in the beginning which is always nice and appreciated. One thing which a bit surprised me is a price for small bottle of wine (2 glasses) 19 € with usual price of glass of 5-6 € in Netherlands and the fact that I’ve asked for Pino Grigio and was brought Pino Gris instead (and bottle was opened immediately). But this is minor thing. I would find other local places in Leiden but if you are really tired-you will not regret that you stay in hotel for the dinner. I’m sure! Dear IrinaThank you for your compliments we are very happy to recived them!Hope that you will visite us againWith kind regards, Petra Brusche F&B manager

The restaurant was pretty empty on a Sunday evening, what we didn't mind a lot. The waitress was friendly and the ambient was rather fine. The prices on the meals were high, but I guess the ingredients and high quality is worth it. I can highly recommend the Tuna Steak, it comes with pickled vegetables and tomato sauce.

Walking through Leiden is nice. It’s a nice university town with a lot of pubs, bars and restaurants. On Saturdays there is a market so some of the boat terraces are hidden behind the market stalls. Roos is one of them. It’s a small restaurant open for lunch and drinks with a terrace on the water. The terrace is very nice and you can see all passing boats in the canal. The menu is also good. We had the soup of the day, sandwich with tuna salad, a salad with goatcheese which was indeed very creamy, marinated chicken sandwich and a BLT. Food good but the chicken a bit dry. They have oatmilk for those who are allergic for lactose so they can have there lattes and chaithee too.
