The atmosphere is comfortable with sofas and cushioned chairs with music playing softly in the background - quiet enough to have a conversation without raising your voice. We went early on the weekend and there were just a few tables busy. When we left the restaurant was almost full. The menu has choices from China, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand with some having a Western twist. For example, bean sprouts salads are very common in some Asian countries but adding salmon to these salads is not traditional. Thus, a fusion of sorts is created. The service was good. We ordered the Thai soup and my expectations were low considering this is Central Asia not SE Asia. Although it did not have the explosion of flavor that Thai food and this soup in particular are known for, it was better than expected and a pleasant version of the soup. The atmosphere is good for groups and couples.

The menu items are slightly odd (a mix of chinese, korean, japanese & central asian), but its in english. Food is decent. They have beer on tap too, and accept credit cards. A solid choice if you're too tired to leave the hotel for a meal.
Where to eat Japanese food in Shymkent: The Best Restaurants and Bars
I live and work in Astana and have been to the Chinese restaurants there and in Almaty. On a visit to Shymkent though we found the best! Imperya serves the most delicious Chinese food we have had in all of out Kazakh travels. I particularly recommend the "fried beef" - the name doesn't do it justice, tender, wafer thin but perfectly cooked beef and veg in a salty yet slightly sweet sauce. The hosted has excellent English and the staff are attentive but not pushy. Highly worth a visit to Shymkent for this food alone!
