We walked into this restaurant on Sat. 20th April and first impressions were, can we just leave please. We were told by someone who lives in Dumfries that this was probably the best one in town, but as the two of us walked in the number of diners increased by 100%.The carpet is taped together, the wallpaper is peeling in parts and it is generally quite dingy with the obligatory 1970's fish tank taking up one complete wall. The menu I was handed was covered in food, for which the waiter apologised and they did not have the starter that we ordered for which they also apologised. The food when it arrived was generally OK, but the taster plate of Chinese strarters was grossly overpriced for what it contained.Overall, average and would we recommend or return, probably not.

Yet again a lovely inexpensive early saturday evening meal. We chose the set meal for 2 and it didnt disappoint. Lovely mixed platter starter and 3 different main meals with a good portion of special fried rice. When paying the bill we recieved the offer of a free drink from "Mine Host" Connie.a lovely gesture. We shall certainly return.

Bored with the trendy, new 'Fusion' restaurants? This is how Chinese restaurants always were and should remain.Standard menu, generous portions of traditional food, served in the traditional way. Young waiters and waitresses lacking confidence but enthusiastic anyway, a Scot Head-Waitress who knows her stuff and the Chinese owner/boss who, (as we have read earlier), doesn't like pushchairs much, but knows how to produce good food at sensible prices.Fourth visit here in as many years, (I'm not local), and the quality is the same.We had Ribs & Crab-corn soup starters, Beef Chow Mein, Special Fried Rice, A Delicious mixed veg, Green Tea and a beer for £25.30.Absolute bargain. What are you waiting for?

When you are in Dumfries and are looking for a nice place to go for a delicious Chinese lunch then the place that I'm about to review is the place for you, and that place is Hong Kong Star located at 89 Friars Vennel. I visited Hong Kong Star for my lunch today and really enjoyed my really delicious Chinese lunch which consisted of prawn cocktail to start, followed by sweet and sour chicken canton served with fried rice and ice cream for desert washed down with diet coke which I absolutely enjoyed.Other reasons why I like Hong Kong Star are that the place is clean, the welcome is warm, the place is really warm on a winters day and the staff are friendly. Overall I really enjoyed my visit and would recommend Hong Kong Star

Visited his restaurant tonight, family of 6for my sons birthday. Staff were very welcoming and moved out table at my request - wanted to move further into the restaurant as I was feeling the cold (admittedly it is freezing outside!) wasnât a bother though. 6 starters - including 4 different soups, prawn toast and chicken spring rolls - all were piping hot and lovely flavours. Main courses - Szechuan combination, szechuan prawn, Kung-po chicken, chicken rainbow sauce and a chow main with black bean sauce all served with rice. Again all dishes were piping hot and full of flavour. Mix of soft and alcoholic drinks and bill came to £100. Lovely meal and very good value. Will definitely be back. restaurant does a buffet night every Friday and Sunday - under £12 per adult....... would definitely be worth a try.
