Lohninger

Opened in 2010 along the Main River in Frankfurt, Restaurant Lohniger suggests a culinary concept that is both “Home and World,” plates referencing Chef’s childhood set alongside Italian and Austrian staples with proper execution across the board. The eponymous home of Mario Lohninger, a man born in the Alps and subsequently trained by Chefs including Guy Savoy, Wolfgang Puck and David Bouley, it was during time in New York and California that the Chef took interest in the sort of fusion taking place at Danube and Spago, an influence since brought back to Germany and a setting clad in white linen.Open daily at Schweizer Strasse 1, an abundance of foot traffic made heavier by weekend street markets poised to create issues for those driving, it is with reservations suggested that diners are invited to enjoy lunch or dinner, each featuring a la carte options from sections titled “Childhood” and “New World” while evenings also suggest a seasonal tasting that can be ordered at one price or in individual courses.Starting every table with an Amuse, the air upscale but family friendly, it was after sipping chilled Cherry Soup that Lohninger’s housemade Bread arrived, two slices of Focaccia and Rye each warm with the latter particularly sour and nicely highlighted by salted local Butter.Still sated from an early morning visit to Erzeugermarkt Konstablerwache, and thus focusing on items recommended by staff as well as friends, Appetizers were omitted in favor of two “Childhood” classics, the guitar-cut Pasta cooked to peerless consistency amidst good Sauce while golden Veal Schnitzel benefitted from higher quality Meat aged to tenderize plus warm Potato Salad brightened by Capers.Further displaying Puck’s influence by including Asian-accented Salads, but retaining classic sensibility with Goulash as well as Cheese Ravioli, it is digging into Austria’s past that most tables finish with a favorite of Franz Joseph I, the “Emperor's Mess” or Kaiserschmarrn soft and tossed with Powdered Sugar that tastes great on its own, but better with imported Apples and Cinnamon, Vanilla Ice Cream or both.

Definitely a great stop if you happen to be in the "city forrest". The Flammkuchen with asparagus (tarte flambé) was fantastic, and so were the green sauce salad with file and the apfelstrudel. Service was also very nice. Why only 4 points? The tables were not really clean at all and there was no soap in the restrooms...

Restaurant Medici

I went to Medici’s based on the many enthusiastic reviews on tripadvisor. Sadly, the experience was a culinary disappointment. It is clear the chef tries to be creative and fancy, but they don’t quite manage to pull it off. My starter was served with a green salad which was bogged down in a heavy dressing, with some mayonnaise criss-crossed on top. This took all the freshness out of it and also didn’t look very appetizing. The scampi was really nice, but accompanied by slices of peeled lemon which were far too agressive for the delicate shellfish. The white asparagus was overcooked and quite fibrous. Hollandaise sauce however was home-made and rather lovely. With one exception (I received my first smile from the person in question when I left a tip...), the service was attentive and very friendly. The terrace is also quite nice, and in a more quiet side street. But despite these positive points, I’m afraid that I cannot recommend Medici’s, especially given their rather high prices.

Freddy's Kartoffelstubb - This little restaurant has a great atmosphere and served some very hearty schnitzel meals and local beer. Think unpretentious pub meals and if this style suits you then consider this eatery if you are in the area.

Went to Esszimmer for their Sunday brunch. It starts at 12:30 to 15:00 so was more a lunch buffet. There isn't much breakfast stuff(eggs, bacon, sausages and such),but had enough different choices for lunch for us not to miss it. Starter choices with good quality cold cuts and cheeses, the mains had duck breast, nice cooked to the point fish, tafelspitze, very tender braised of cheeks and accompanying sides. The mains were much better cooked than the sides. Wok station for noodles. Good dessert variety with chocolate covered fruits, various cakes fresh crepes. These were just some of the highlights for me. There were still plenty that I didn't have room to try. At around 49 Euro per head it isn't a cheap option but that includes all drinks and us better value when compared to similar offerings in town and other hotels where drinks are on top. Seating is also nice as they have partitioned off areas with 6~7 tables so even though the restaurant is quite big, one never feels like it's overcrowded unlike the intercontinental or at the Westin. There is a separate area where a children's brunch is set up and amusements such as balloon animals available. Overall recommendable as a nice brunch place especially if you want something a little nicer but also child friendly. Slightly outside the city but worth the visit.
