Man will ja fair bleiben.

Lovely building with a modern touch inside. Friendly service and a good selection of food from Bavaria. The beer-garden is a cosy place to relax on warm days. Ate and drank here many times.

German food is always good anyway. Somehow, the Germans take things seriously. If something is worth doing, then do it well.Excellent traditional German food, in traditional surroundings. The service was great. So was the food - catering well for vegetarians. Perhaps not a huge choice for vegetarians but what I had was good. Really nice to relax here on your own. Good value too.I'd certainly come here again.

Had lovely lunch in town square - very traditional German fare, think Schnitzel and potatoe salad, but all freshly cooked. Nice if you can sit outside during the day, but inside fine for nighttime "Kneipe"

We ate at this restaurant during a weeklong stay in Herford, visiting our daughter who lived there at the time. It was a birthday celebration for my wife and we walked to the restaurant, located just off the inner ring road in central Herford. Blessed with a warm, sunny evening, we opted to sit outside; the restaurant was pretty dead on a Wednesday evening and I think there may only have been another three or four tables occupied during the evening. The Alte Schule is quiet pricey compared to most of the other restaurants located in Herford so not sure if that had anything to do with it. We had a glass of Prosecco each while we pondered the menu and then a bottle of Primitivo from Puglia to share, together with bottle water, pricey enough at Euro 6 per bottle though the wine was very reasonable at under Euro 20. For starters I had Crunchy Quail Lasagne with shitake mushrooms and mango chutney while my had Apple onion, veal liver ravioli with sauce and nuts while my wife had Baked Mozzarella in a herb crust with linguine in a ricotta peppercorn sauce. For mains, I had, while my wife had Surf and Turf with Orzo pasta though strangely the steak was braised, which is unusual for a Surf and Turf. My daughter had Bouillabaisse Risotto with Monk Fish. I had the dessert selection and my daughter had the cheese board, both of which were just okay, perhaps a little disappointing. The bill came to Euro 155.50 before the tip. We had a pleasant evening with good service and would most likely return if in Heford again.

We dine here regularly, a lot of choice on the menu. Portions are huge so you won't be leaving hungry. There is also a lunch time special which are smaller portions and for around 8 euros for a 3 course menu it is worth every cent and more.

We ate at this restaurant on the first night of a weeklong stay in Herford, visiting our daughter who lived there at the time. We walked to the restaurant, located literally just outside the suburbs of Herford, on a balmy summer evening, up the hill with a cornfield on one side and a wheat field on the other. There was a wedding reception taking place but we managed to get a very good outside table overlooking the fields with two hot-air balloons floating about not far off. The staff were friendly and helpful and a couple of them spoke good English. The menus were only available in German, fair enough as Herford is not particularly on the main tourist circuit but it does nonetheless still have a couple of barracks full of British service personnel. Having previously lived in Germany, albeit nearly 30 years ago, I was able to translate most of the menu and the waiter was able to assist with the odd word or two. As is common in Germany, the menu was heavily influenced with Pork dishes but was varied enough. In our party of four, three of us had the Beef Carpaccio for starters, which was sublime, while one had a chicken satay skewer in a coconut broth, which was also very good. For mains, between us we had a fillet steak, pork cordon-bleu, hamburger and fries, and I had Pork Tenderloin, which was very salty. I had forgotten just how generous portions tend to be in Germany and the Steinmeyer lived up to this reputation. Unfortunately, having sat chatting for while after the main courses, when we did eventually ask for the dessert menu, we were told that the kitchen was closed! Just as well I suppose! So, while not blown away by the food, the setting makes for a really nice evening out and with the exception of over-seasoned pork fillet, the food was pretty good and I would most likely return if in Heford again.

Nice here. Big choice of wine (we enjoyed numbers 29 and 36) and good food. The english-speaking waiter was personable and helpful. For the record i had steak and penne with hot peppercorn sauce and the other one had the salmon. Good ambience, try to get a 1st floor table.
