We enjoy Japanese food but for a change we tried this pizza and craft beer restaurant. It is a small cozy restaurant and we had a table near the fire. The beers were popular with the beer lovers of our group. The pizzas were quite good, more in the Italian style with thin crust and sparse filling, which I enjoy. The women running it were cheerful and helpful and spoke good English. There were some interesting, enjoyable toppings and an apple and cinnamon one for dessert. Probably a little more expensive than some of the small traditional Japanese restaurants close by. Good atmosphere. It was an enjoyable night.
Strolling around the Zao area and found our first Japan Costco. Went crazy to see the J version of this discount supergiant and skipped lunch. Randomly found this nice little cafe hiding in a quiet neighbourhood, with lots of parking spaces. Neat and tidy with the right volume of relaxing background music. We ordered coffee to pair it with their signature snow honey pancake. Friendly English speaking staff recommended also the cherry pancake. Coffee was nice, Japanese style. Both homemade cakes were perfect for the afternoon. Not enough snow for the time being and all flowers were gone, yet it should be an ideal cafe to chill out. Also an excellent stop-over for long journey drivers into this area. Staff also generously walked us to the adjoining garden of a Japanese tea cafe, run by the same owner. A totally different vibe - tranquil Japanese garden with a carp pond. She even shows us carp with a bright red heart shape right on top of some of their heads. Very cute indeed!
Yamagata Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Yamagata
The restaurant looks inviting with a nice shop front and English menu outside. The interior is really nice and warm with two big fires that heat the restaurant. We went for dinner. The food was quite good and reasonably priced. English menu which is helpful. Very popular with westerners in fact 2/3 of the restaurant were westerners. This could be because of proximity to mountain, Sunday night and not much open... And English menu. Good beer selection... Craft beers and draft beer and good selection of spirits and cocktails. What we found confusing was the lack of Japanese custom... Do you go to the counter to order a beer or do they come to the table..?? when we called sumi masen for a drink the guy came to fix the fire and then looked confused when we asked for a drink... Maybe we got it wrong... Do we pay at the table or at the counter... ??? Again we would normally ask for the bill but we went to the counter to pay... Again maybe our understanding. This is fine but different to other restaurants we have been in. Japan is sometimes confusing enough without added confusion... When we left there was no farewell or customary thank you... Again maybe us and our expectations. The meal was fine and well priced with good atmosphere so an overall good experience.

This mochi here is just amazing. It’s freshly made without preservatives and once I had these, I can never eat mochi that comes out of a plastic bag. One wagamama set (3 mochi and 1 small coffee) is not enough!!! It’s too good to just order one set.
