The «bread-test» is a simple but quite reliable indicator if the chief of a restaurant cares for the little details in his kitchen or not: If the bread is crispy and freshly cut you can expect delicious dishes. The new «Cannavacciulo Cafè e Bistro» in Novara failed the test: An attentive and friendly waiter put the breadbasket on our table. The bread-slices unfortunately were already dry on the surface. «We cut the bread before rush hour of our service » explained the waiter to our soft critic. He immediately brought a new basket of bread. Obviously not freshly cut. Ahemâ¦If a restaurant carries the name «Cannavacciolo» in its name you expect only the best: The great Italian cook from the «Villa Crespi» appears regularly in TV-Shows, in newspaper-ads and TV-spots advertising for Gorgonzola or other Italian goodies. This time the bread-test proofed to be unprecise: First we were surprised with a unexpected «amuse geule» made with foam of Mascarpone on a crispy popped rice bed as a welcome from the kitchen. Nice! The following «insalata mista» was fresh and ok â but definitely to expensive (12 Euro). Then arrived another surprise we didnât order: a small plate of perfectly cooked risotto. Yamyam! The main course was a big chunk of «Fassone» beef â a prime filet from the famous Piemontese cattle. We ordered it rare-to-medium, but it was more like medium-to-well-done. Despite excellent quality of the meat therefore a bit dry. But the dish was accompanied with a contorno of tasty Cima Rape and cubes of potato-gratin.The best unexpected surprise came with the simple coffee: a plate of «aragoste dolce»-a crispy millefoglie brioche filled with whipped cream.» The bread at the beginning could have learned from itâ¦Dear UrskernThank you for your wonderfully detailed review and for choosing to dine at the Cannavacciuolo Caffè & Bistrot. We apologise most sincerely about the bread and we are thankful for this observation so that we can do our utmost to ensure bread is freshly cut. On the other hand we are simply delighted that on the whole you enjoyed the cooking and our little surprises. We are most attentive of our guests' comments as they are the key to greater service in our restaurant. We naturally hope that you will return for a second dining experience with us.Warm wishesCinzia Primatesta Cannavacciuolo

This salad bar restaurant is packed with locals during lunchtime. You have to order on a computer in Italian, but I was able to find a local to help me. First you chose your salad, couscous, quinoa, rice, wheat or pasta base, and then one or more of the many (at least thirty) additions. Someone behind the counter will mix everything together for you. I had quinoa with shrimp, eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, and olives. The total came to 7 Euro and 160 Kcal (which is calculated for you), but I suspect this is not including the quinoa or olive oil.

Our friend brought us to this great little place for cappuccino. The owner was very friendly and the drinks (I passed on the coffee) and the bread, oil & olives were delicious. It is a great place to get a true feel of the friendliness of Novara.
