After driving around the island trying to find somewhere for breakfast being a Monday and most places were shut for breakfast in April! We stopped at Morrison’s. We had full English’s which was okay! But I would say that the staff were really lovely very helpful and happy which is always half of the battle

My friend and I meet once a month in Newport, Isle of Wight, for coffee/hot chocolate and cake. There are so many cafes etc. to chose from and we usually have a good experience. We have visited The Primrose cafe once before, when we had a 'The Price is Wight' promotional deal and had a good experience. However, not so today! I think the lady behind the counter is the mother of the lady who bakes the cakes. When we first entered, I gave her a voucher from a magazine giving a 10% discount. I asked her if the voucher was still current and she mumbled at me that it was. Okay. We ordered a coffee and slice of carrot cake and a hot chocolate with a slice of chocolate cake. She served me a basic hot chocolate, not bothering to ask me if I'd like cream and/or marshmallows on top. I didn't say anything, as my friend was paying. The slices of cake are generous portions, and the carrot cake was delicious. The chocolate cake, however, was not. It was a Nutella cake and the topping was nice, but the cake itself was bone dry and hardly tasted of chocolate! We both tasted it and both agreed that it was not a good cake at all. At £2.95 a slice, it was a big disappointment.I took it up to the counter and said this to the lady, who just grunted at me! I said that she should mention it to the baker, but again I just got mumbled grunts! No apology and no offer to replace it with something else.I had taken a business card off the counter when we first arrived, as I shall be running a holiday letting business from May 2018 and I'm building up a folder of places to recommend to guests. After we'd left the cafe, I looked at the card properly and on the back there were 8 circles to be stamped every time you bought a hot drink there. When all 8 are stamped, you get a free hot drink. This was not mentioned to us on our first visit, only last month, or today. We should have 4 stamps and be half way to our free drink! We shall not be going to that cafe again and I will not be putting their details in my folder for holiday guests.Thank you for your review. I am very sorry that your trip to our cafe was not as we would expect and that the chocolate cake you had was not up to standard. I believe cake should always be an enjoyable thing so I am upset that this was not the case. If you would like to contact me at [email protected] will see what we can do to restore your faith in us and let you know what steps we have taken to ensure this does not happen again. Kind Regards Fiona

Really nice little place that we were fortunate to find on the way to catch the ferry home to the mainland. We had delicious breakfasts, really tasty sausages and eggs, milk from the farm dairy, beautiful bread, friendly staff, would definitely recommend. Unfortunately we did not have time to visit the farm shop. Recommended.Thank you so much for this great review. Really glad you discovered us on your way home. Do hope you make it back one day and get the chance to explore our Heritage Centre and visit the farm shop which is bursting with local goodies!

The Original Phil's Diner

This restaurant has an American theme but also features English food. It is on the Newport High Street in Isle of Wight and is very popular there.

Reviewed By pho2journo2003

I very rarely give five stars as I reserve it for places that I would hunt out again and again, so it’s not light heartedly that I give Phil’s a high four/low five rating.Overall the restaurant was clean and staff friendly. The food was pretty darn close to classic American diner food of the fifties, with the decor to match. We couldn’t resist the all day breakfasts which were generously portioned. My husband had a Big breakfast and it finished him off for the rest of the day. The bacon was the floppy English type as opposed to crispy American style. The waffles were pretty good - sweeter than normal, and would have liked a tad more maple syrup, but they we good enough as they came. We also had a burger and kids hotdog that went down very well. You know you have a good thing when the kids go quiet for the entire meal other than to ask if they can try a bite of this or that. Our meal spanned over 2pm, so we decided for desert (even though we were all stuffed!) to have milkshakes (2 for 1 after 2pm). The Oreo was pretty good and mint chocolate was tasty too. Only thing to improve here is less milk and more ice ream. American milk shakes are meant to be mostly ice cream, almost too thick to suck up the straw! Would love to have seen malts on the menu (more authentic American twist) as well. Overall really enjoyed the meal and will be back before we move on to our next location!

We didn’t get to eat or to drink. A nice sunny day where you could sit outside and wait to be served. And wait. People arrived, sat down and waited and left. Perhaps they were busy although didn’t look it, maybe understaffed or maybe they just don’t care - who knows.Apologies, it was particularly busy on the 11th. This time of year we unfortunately do get caught out by a sudden influx from time to time. The staff were very busy. Please accept my apologies again.
