Ieper found itself in the middle of World War I and suffered tremendous damage to all of its buildings, but has been both reconstructed in its medieval style and built up with modern structures.

Thank you to the manager for his response to my post below. Since you cared enough to respond, I would like you to have the details of this incident. We have learned that when we travel if we simply ask for âcoffeeâ we are often served expresso, which we do not care for. We ask if an establishment has âAmerican coffee.â On the day in question I asked your server, a young lady, if you had American coffee. She said she did. I asked her how much it was and I âthoughtâ she said 3 euro. I subsequently asked for an American coffee with milk. My husband and son were to join me in moments for coffee as well. What I got was a teacup HALF full. I was shocked. I gave her two 2 euro coins.... never got change. My husband and son joined me, took one look at what I got and said they would not get coffees after all. I took a picture of the half cup because I could not believe it. I donât know what happened with your measured machines or your server and my change. All I know is I paid 4 euro and got half a teacup of some kind of coffee. I rarely give a rating of 1.... only 6 in about 400 reviews. I am very glad that most of your reviews are positive. You are obviously doing a good job. I just have to be honest about MY experience, and it was not good. Thank you again for your response.

I was leading a coach of young students on a two day battlefield tour and our hotel was nearby. The breakfast was rather basic so I popped into Maona - best thing Iâve done and the perfect place for a luscious choice of breakfast and coffee which was badly needed! All freshly made with a wide choice and the coffee is to die for... I will definitely return when Iâm next over - it does both takeaway and sit in so all options covered.A superb place!!

This is a small bar-restaurant run by Johan Vanderwalle and his wife and is a great stop-off after walking the length of Polygon Wood from the Australian 5th Division Memorial. The beer is cold and a pate salad lunch is great value and a real treat. Johan has also many relics of the First World War with a special emphasis on things Australian. And when you're there, give him a "gidday" for Aussie.

We stopped here twice for a drink while exploring Ypres, and sat in the cozy little outside seating area. The owner has spent a lot of time and effort collecting artifacts and memorabilia from the First World War, and has constructed a surprisingly large museum to house the collection in the basement. This is one of the best private museums I have ever visited, with (very!) realistic sound effects to convey the horror and carnage of an artillery barrage and trench warfare. And it's free! I highly recommend this bar/museum to anyone wishing to experience the confusion and terror felt by the soldiers in the trenches in World War 1.
