General Merchants (EAST)

First time here and a very different menu, compared to most cafes of this type.Busy, even though we arrived well after the usual lunch rush. Bit, a table for 4 available and water straight to the table. I like that. very pleasant staff. food was great. My wife and our friend had soup, served in a huge bowl with toast sourdough. My son and I had a pulled pork stuffed roll with mustard mayonnaise and it was delicious. The bowl of fry was also excellent. Finished off with the best flat white I've had in a long time.

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch at The Ulster Folk & Transport Museum's Ballycultra Tearoom. We found the pricing, as with the dual faceted museum itself, very reasonable for the overall quality and service, representing fine value in addition to a charming atmosphere. For our very good deal fare of E16, we thoroughly enjoyed two tasty broccoli soups, shared an excellent veggie grain quiche, and finished with two different scones and delicious lattes. The young counter woman was a delightful representative of excellent service and care as well.If it were a free standing street establishment rather than situated in an enclosed ticketed environment and we lived nearby, it'd become a regulal haunt. That's, i do realize, a lot of wishful supposition, especially for two New Yorkers.

The Lamppost Cafe

Reviewed By StephenWaringstown

Serendipity! We were visiting a lighting supplier on the Newtownards Road when the assistant overheard us talking about a caffeine fix. She immediately recommended a cafe opposite and gave us two vouchers for free coffee! This cafe, The Lamppost, was completely new to both of us and seems to have sprung up from nowhere. Now, East Belfast in general and the Newtownards Road in particular, has always had a very different, but good culture, from other parts of the city. Ballyhackamore has developed into an area know for its culinary delights and this has now spread city-wards to the Arches area. The cafe itself, is completely different - other reviewers use terms like shabby chic and bohemian- I would not dare vary from this other than to add that the backcloth to the design lies fairly and squarely with the legacy of CS Lewis. Culture amongst the croissants! I understand that the Owners Mother in Law was instrumental in the design stage!Foodwise, we had our free coffee which was first class along with scones, jam and cream. Low cal- probably not. Delicious- undoubtedly. The overall menu was excellent and the staff were superb and helpful. The cafe is a most desirable addition to East Belfast and a visit is highly recommended. Will we be back - you bet. At the risk of offending some people, I do have concerns with "pet friendly" establishments. This is my only gripe otherwise The Lamppost would have been awarded my 5 star rating.

We visited Brazilia for breakfast and really enjoyed the experience. It is comfortable, nice decor, service was fast, friendly and efficient. Food came quickly and was excellent. Only criticism is that staff tend to gather behind counter, as many as 4 or 5, and chat so they are not watching when something required for example more coffee.

The coffee is, of course, superb in Cargo and never disappoints. The bagel selection is also enjoyable and surprisingly satisfying. On this visit we were pleased to find that the menu has had some new additions. I really enjoyed a croissant with deliciously soft scrambled eggs and salmon, while my wife enjoyed the sourdough topped with mushrooms and truffle houmous.Matt and the staff team are always pleasant and welcoming to all customers. Why go anywhere else in Holywood?

Not our first visit to this cafe in the busy suburban town of Hollywood. As always a varied menu was available ranging from a quick snack to a more substantial meal.Service was quick and efficient though staff could have been a little more communicative (but that will doubtless come with experience).Overall a very pleasant experience with good quality food and value for money. Certainly well worth a visit.

I had lunch with family here and we were looking for a fry. The waitress was accommodating and said the chef could customise their ‘fry in a bap’ for us. I had the avocado, poached egg on toast and it was very small. I left still hungry and it didn’t have roasted tomatoes as other images showed. The poached egg was hard and disappointing as was the overcooked single slice of bacon which cost and additional £1. I shouldn’t have bothered as it was tasteless. The coffee tasted nice, however was very small.I am sorry that you left less than fully satisifed with our food offering. The coffees only come in one size (8oz), which is the standard for a specialty coffee shop. However, I would love if you could email me with the time and date that you ate with us so I can investigate the matter of the missing item and the poor quality food. Thanks
