Find out what Cafe restaurants to try in Hartford. From its origins as a Connecticut River trading post in 1633, Hartford has become not only the state capital but also the insurance capital of the world, with a slew of historical attractions, a thriving arts and entertainment center, a revitalized riverfront and beautiful parks and public gardens. It was here that the lovable Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer were born in the imagination of celebrated author Mark Twain and immortalized on paper during the writer's Hartford years. Twain's home and those of fellow literary figures Harriet Beecher Stowe and Noah Webster are open to the public. The Wadsworth Atheneum, the oldest public art museum in the U.S., houses Pilgrim-Century furniture, the Amistad collection and a special treasure hunt system to entice kids to explore the museum's works. If your timing is right (end of June, beginning of July), you'll catch the Elizabeth Park rose gardens in bloom, but fall is also great for brilliant leaf colors, and spring yields colorful gardens and blossoming trees. For a bird's-eye view of the city, visit the observation deck of Travelers Tower, where you might also spot two resident falcons.

Nestled on the pond in historic Elizabeth Park the Pond House is surrounded by gardens & offers four seasons of charm with a menu to match. Changed seasonally we offer eclectic comfort food that reflects the down to earth but playful spirit of our staff.
I have passed by this place on several occasions and even had gone to exhibits there, but this is the first time I ate there. It was a very pretty day and many had the same idea as my friend and I. Eating outside is first come, first serve. We had made reservations which are taken for eating inside or on the "open" porch which we did. A "tablet" is given to you as your menu where you can go over the specials and other offerings. Our server, Michael, was great and very helpful. We both chose the "Lady Astor" chicken salad sandwich on croissant which came with a chopped salad. We enjoyed it and our time to catch-up, relaxing at the restaurant. We both passed on dessert and left very satisfied.

Although the lunch got off to a rocky start, with poor service at first, things really picked up at a certain point, and all was well, despite inconsistencies. The food was excellent. The ample burger was so wonderful that I thought about it, and lusted for another one, for several hours. The trout was excellent, too, but there was ridiculously little food on the plate, given its price -- a small rectangle of fish, just 5 half-pieces of fingerling potato, no rolls or side salad. Prices are reasonable for most things, but you might find it really pricey to bring a family with several children here. Decent variety of alcoholic drinks available. The downside here is that the tables and some seating are really shabby. The banquettes are really very dirty and need to be reupholstered desperately. The tables are rickety, rocking back and forth (with people sticking the table tents under the legs), and paint is flaking off the tables. With no cloths or place mats, the flaking paint and the stickiness of the tables is really unappealing. But go here for the delicious food and convenience.
