Also known as the Gasthaus zur Kugelmuehle (because it used to be a marble mill, powered by the Almbach) this is a lovely inn at the car park end of the spectacular Almbachklamm. We reached it having hiked around the Kniefelspitze from Hintergern, and were more than ready to sit down in the lovely, welcoming restaurant. It's beautiful inside, very traditional and immaculately presented - actually a more formal restaurant than we were expecting, since we took it to be visitor's cafe, considering the location. We ordered pots of coffee and kartoffelpuffer mit apfelmuss (potato pancakes with apple sauce) which were very tasty and very nicely presented. The waiter was attentive, efficient, friendly and allowed us to use our German, whilst considerately slowing down the way he spoke to be sure that we understood. The meal set us up nicely for the hike along the steep paths of the gorge!

I visit always when back from my work out of Austria. The cakes and the choice are great. Sometime I take some cakes out and share with my neighbours who take care of my flat when I was away,

This cafe is special to this little town of Hallein for good reasons that hardly bear worth mentioning in normal cafe life. Hallein is a beautiful Austrian town surrounded by forests and lakes clean ( and safe!) enough to swim in. But as a tourist town it is remarkable in that most local shop keepers have very little or no English speaking skills. On top of that the whole town closes down on Saturday lunchtime for the weekend, no buts. And having tried several cafes in the town, asking for toast with breakfast is like asking for a loan of a tenner from a stranger. You are made to feel like you have unapologetically broken wind in polite company. Nobody has toast for breakfast here. All that changes when you find this cafe near the town centre that boldly boasts that it is open everyday. It is warm colourful and a treat to sit inside. The owner/ manageress has very good English and when I pointed to a toastie in the picture menu she confirmed , " you would like a toastie ?" And nodding and smiling like I had won the secret prize I asked for a further two slices of toast. All the food is well presented and the staff courteous and attentive. What a relief to find such an oasis on shut down Sunday. If you ever find yourself in Hallein it is definitely worth a visit.
