Things to do in South Uist
We dined here nightly while staying in the hotel. The staff are lovely and the bar and dining rooms are charming, decorated in an eclectic combination of historic and contemporary items. The food was very good and servings plentiful. Our only complaint was that each night we were here, an ever-growing list of the items on the menu became unavailable. It turned into a running joke with our group. You would have thought that no supplies were reaching the island, although the restaurant is literally twenty feet from the ferry so that was clearly not the case. By our last night, only about half of the menu items were available to order! Even more exciting was the night the power went out during the meal, though the kitchen still managed to get our dinners to us. Despite all of this, the quality of the cooking was very good, especially the Haggis, Neeps and Tatty Tower appetizer which was delicious. We would dine here again, but hope that the entire menu is on offer when we do!

Had a meal here when staying self catering on the island. Service was O.K. but food felt expensive for what we got but nothing was outstanding. Hotel felt a bit lacking in atmosphere but might be better if staying here. Very quiet when we were in but not much choice locally, unless you want to travel but there are other places within a few miles.
Family run fish and chip shop. We serve a range of meals including fish and chips scampi, chicken and burgers. We also do a range of breakfast rolls and teas and coffees.
Stopped at the Burnside cafe/chipper for fish and chips after a day out. We were a bit dubious because of the surroundings. Oh how wrong we were. Freshly cooked haddock of good size and quality and gorgeous chips. We sat at the picnic bench in glorious sun on our last night on South Uist eating the most fresh and gorgeous fish and chips. This little takeaway is a gem and I canât wait to go back next year.

I arranged in advance for a large group to eat here, and we pre -ordered 3 course meals. The group were mostly from abroad and Karen took this into account and arranged a very nice selection which included local fish, scallops, haggis, and black pudding, also Sticky Toffee Pudding dessert. A well thought out menu. Much appreciated. The food was lovely, but despite pre ordering, one main course didn't turn up, or was given to wrong person, meaning one of our group had to wait for his main course. The desserts we had pre- ordered, one of those choices, strawberry cheesecake was no longer on the menu, which was disappointing for those who had ordered it. However the Rhubarb Crumble served in it's place, with individual jugs of custard was enjoyed by those who had it.Generally, we enjoyed the meal, and the work Karen put into planning the menu before we arrived was appreciatedThe staff were friendly.Ceilidh music was also provided especially for us by Callum.

We were staying close to Orosay Inn so it only seemed right that we paid them a visit. We were not disappointed. Fresh food served with local knowledge of where it was sourced. I had Monk fish scampi and my partner had venison, which, melted in the mouth.Go and see for yourself and discover the experience for yourself. You get out of life what you put in and that includes food. Many Thanks

We went into Barbara's after visiting the Kildonan Museum - you do not have to go back outside. There was plenty of choice on the menu from rolls & sandwiches to fresh crab salad or soup. The staff were very friendly and the service quick although there were only a couple of other visitors there at the same time as us.

We were staying in a cottage not far from Orasay and in the visitors' book, there were several favourable comments about this restaurant. So it was natural that we should book a dinner reservation - and we were glad we did. The atmosphere was pleasant and welcoming; and the meal was very good. We both had (different) soups; and for main courses, my wife had a seafood dish and I had lamb shank - both memorable. Also memorable was the view from the dining room, where one could see as far as the islands of Rhum and Skye. Our total bill, including two glasses of wine and generously-sized cups of espresso, was under £60 - not unreasonable for a quality meal in this location.

The reason for our "expedition" to the Outer Hebrides this past summer (August) was to visit as many of the ancient, megalithic sites as paossible, from Barra to Lewis. When in my research of South Uist sites I came upon the Pollacher Standing Stone in close proximity to the Polochar Inn I knew we were in for a special treat. My wife and I visited the standing stone earlier in the day, so when Rosemary, our host at our B&B, offered to book us a table at the hotel for dinner we were excited that we would get to see the stone in evening light also. But, what about the restaurant and the food? The dining room includes a small bar. The real pub is in another room. For those of us who prefer eating in a quieter atmosphere the dining room is best. The menu was varied and it took some time to decide on our dinners. I ended up choosing the chicken breast over veggies and Mary had the salmon. Both entrees were very good and we certainly did not leave the table hungry. An extra special pleasure for me was that a bottle of Innis & Gunn Original Ale was available from the bar. The view of the sea, past the carpark (with the perky sheep dog), was great!!!
