We ate here on day 6 of our coast to coast walk. We were lucky to find a table as they were very busy. Delicious food and the dog was welcome too!

Pub with rooms and restaurant in Kirkby Stephen (by the way - type of cuisine above does not accept any entry)
After a walk we called in here, expecting it to be a old traditional pub, it wasn't.We went into the bar area, it was a bit quiet but clean and dog friendly. There was a limited choice of ales,, it was nothing special, so we quickly moved on elsewhere.Staff were friendly and helpful

A warm and friendly welcome and the manageress and chef could not do enough to accommodate our needs. The venue was very clean and we were very pleased with what we ate, which was Steak and salad, we just wanted a quick one course evening meal on our way home from the Lakes. Although I've rated the restaurant as a 3 star, the service was was 5 star. I would recommend this restaurant highly, Wednesday night is teak night, Thursday night is pie night. Will be going again when in the area.

After staying locally for a week and on our return journey we stopped off for breakfast at this lovely little cafe. We were welcomed in with our black Labrador who was fussed over and immediately brought aBowl of water and a little something from the treat jar. We had breakfast baps and a sandwich and all were very nice. Owners were very friendly and it was a lovely cafe. We even managed to buy some of the displayed teapots which we were very pleased about. Highly recommended place to eat. Thanks very much for the comments. It was a pleasure having you in the cafe and the dog was very well behaved as well as being absolutely lovely. Hope you had a safe journey home

We came across here by accident during a country drive. We were glad we stopped off because this a friendly, characterful pub in a beautiful area. We ordered a very tasty lunch of fish and chips and burger and chips. Good portions and well cooked. The motor inspired memorabilia added to the atmosphere, and the service was super friendly and prompt.

Popular Cafe/Bistro in centre of Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.
After cycling mostly uphill all day, this cafe produced a great panni/wrap. Perfectly adequate to send us on our way again.

Visited Fri 20th sept and both had the sirloin steaks. Cleared the plate. Returned on the Sunday and both had the lamb Sunday lunch. Licked the plate clean! Love this pub, the location, the staff. Not forgetting the fantastic food and great choices of ales. You really won't find better in the area.

Beautiful Country Pub in the heart of Winton. Serving food every lunch time and evening from 12-2pm and 6-9pm with Sunday Carvery every Sunday Lunchtime.
Having read the reviews I drove to Winton from Preston under Scar to celebrate my Wife's birthday accompanied by our daughter. We know Kirkby Stephen very well but Winton and The Bay Horse were off our radar until now. Yes it is a long way to drive at just over 50 miles round trip, but with the scenery, the shopping in Kirkby and the wonderful discover that was the Bay Horse, there were complaints. The standard of food from a Thursday lunch perspective was fabulous, the service in terms of being met on arrival and speed of food to table was very good given that there was only one person front of house. There were only three sets of diners including us, however, despite the lack of people, the characterful design, decor and overall aesthetics of the place was warm and welcoming. You are going to pay a little more here than you would for standard "Pub grub," but as I pointed out, the Bay Horse is far from standard. An important thing to point out which we thought a great idea. You can choose a 'Regular' or 'Small' main course which given the waste you see on some plates in pubs and restaurants is a cracking idea. My wife and daughter ordered the small Fresh Scampi, I ordered the large and wished later on that I had picked the former. Cannot wait to book an evening meal there as friends have said the food is nothing short of outstanding. Maybe, following that experience I will give the extra star.

We ate on 27th April and the food and service were both excellent. My partner had chicken in Stilton cream sauce and says you can't get better than delicious. I had haddock and chips both of which were cooked to perfection. Best book as it is only a small dining room. The Black Bull is very conveniently situated on the High St and if you are lucky you can park in the street.
