I quite often bemoan that there is nowhere really good to gofor breakfast in St Helens town centre...there is Vigour (but it doesn't open until 11am)...there is Lily's Victorian tea room (but that has gone so downhill it is virtually at the Albert Docks)...and then I discover the wonderfully named 'Phoenix Plant Based Eatery'. Tucked away opposite the Theatre Royal and adjoining the bus station in St Helens' tiny alternative Bohemian quarter, this establishment has somehow eluded me for all this time.Upon arrival there was a friendly greeting and the whole place has a wonderful charm and delightful feel about it. I ordered the 'full English' and this being a vegan cafe I was assuming I would get the standard, and often, tasteless non-meat alternative...I was wrong...very wrong. The presentation was lovely...the sausage was so flavoursome and the fake bacon was a masterpiece (I asked the owner afterwards what was in it and the process that she goes through to get the look of streaky bacon is mind-boggling laborious...but so tasty). There was a frittata which was lovely too...and the scrambled not-eggs was well....well it tasted like scrambled eggs without eggs so meh!!! I had a go at least. All accompanied by a delicious cup of coffee...they had run out of almond milk and so I had it black and it was just right, not bitter at all.All this with an accompaniment of whale sounds...no I jest, it was Dean Martin I think...it was changed after a while to something a little less croonery. If this place was in the Bohemian quarter of Liverpool or Manchester then I would say this was a really good place to hang-out and get away from it all, and would stand out from the rest there....as this place is in St Helens, it damn near screams at me to call in. I shall definitely be back, if only for a cup of coffee and a mooch around the upcycling, vintage shop upstairs. I am also keen to return for one of their vegan Pimblett's pies and sample the hype. So glad I have found this place...it really did make my day.

Returned here after a break due to the place going from 5 star to zero following a takeover, however, now under a different manager and whilst not yet back to the standard of a few years back everything is cooked fresh and to a good standard, Sunday lunch was very good, we will return to try other food here & update again but is worth a visit.

Booked the steak night on Friday 25th October and were not disappointed. Ordered Chateaubriand and when this arrived looked amazing. The taste matched the look and we were extremely happy. The desert of banana baked Alaska and the deconstructed cheesecake were also excellent. The waitress service was excellent and with full view of the kitchen could see exactly what was going on a busy working kitchen. The cocktails were good and the old fashioned finished the night off well. Would definitely recommend. A valued addition to this area. Can't wait to return.

Me, my wife and 2 teens visited here on Wednesday 4th September 2019. We were a little apprehensive after reading some of the previous other reviews which were not complimentary. Those reviews proved to be ridiculous. The fool who commented that the waitress wasnât rushed off her feet on his visit sums of the idiocy of some of these reviews. Last night the waitress was brilliant. She wasnât rushed off her feet because she is a professional! She handled our requests excellently. I guess being French explains why she was a little more laid back than some would prefer. I am fortunate to have been able to travel all over the world (check out my other reviews) and rarely have we had food this good, presented so well at this price range. This food is easily equal to that if some fine dining, 5 star restaurants I have eaten in. If this was London the price would be massively more expensive. The menu is limited simply because everything is cooked on site (in an open kitchen). I could open a restaurant with 30 main dishes if it was all microwave food. This restaurant is the real deal and we will be back. Ignore the reviews from the goons who will always find something to complain about. Try this place out and you will be pleasantly surprised.
