In the serious world of BBQ man-up, this place has to be included. James Beard award winner Kenny Gilbert and his partner and staff have made this a gem. Unpretentious former gas station has a laid back atmosphere. Good list of very reasonably priced beers and wines (as in $5 for a good wine pour or 12 oz cans/bottles -- but no draft). Fabulous two- or four-footed options for the melt-in-your-mouth barbecues. We had the sliced brisket and the pulled turkey. Sides are plentiful and exceptional -- bitter collards were southern-cooked with a touch of honey. Mac and cheese was less gummy casserole and more pasta-with-cheese sauce. An old fashioned metal rack of six sauces ranged from well-spiced to spicy-with-a-kick. Tomato-based, mustard-based, citrus vinaigrette and even a mayo-based. Servers and staff were so nice. Please don't tell them that the $10 Mon-Fri lunch special during the week is priced way too low!!!! You won't go hungry. Apparently, they serve a full menu all day, everyday, so cannot comment on that.

Captain Jack’s Smokehouse

On our first visit there, we were hosting our dear friend to celebrate her birthday. They have a full service bar and a moderate sized salad bar. It is nicely decorated and has large windows overlooking the marsh with a distant view of the Intracoastal Waterway. They have both booth and table seating options available. We were lucky to be seated at a booth next to one of their large picture windows. Since we hadn’t had any previous experience with their entrées, we decided to share a choice of 6 meat entrées and 6 spare ribs. We had a round of cokes, which were very good. Service was outstanding, from the manager, to the hostess to our server. Our server, Heather, was efficient and had a personality as wonderful as her southern accent and she made the culinary experience more enjoyable. They even let me bring in a special dessert earlier in the day for a timely presentation at the end of the meal.We chose one of each of their six meat entrées for our six entree combo. There was beef brisket, sausage, pulled pork, pork belly, ribs, half a chicken and a couple of slices of toast. That choice gave us an excellent idea of what to order on a return visit. The brisket was a little dry. The sausage was nice a spicy, just the way I like it. Everything else was very good. We don’t go out very often, but will definitely return. The whole experience was very pleasing.

Gilbert is a chef who specializes in local Southern cuisine, including barbecue, a wonderful hot chicken dish, and many other options. There are imaginative appetizers, this time a baba Ganoush with cauliflower, smoked. All dishes come with homemade pickles and peppers, and all are delicious. Highly recommended.

We took the family to dinner at Woody's BBQ. The service was pretty bad - took about 30 minutes to get our food after ordering. They brought the wrong order to our table. Food was OK - pretty dry. New owner stopped by and chatted - he is definitely trying, but lots of training still required. We may try it again!
