Coming from the south, we were hoping for a great smoked BBQ meal (smells fabulous in the area around the restaurant)...but found ourselves very unimpressed. Hubby had a pork and tri-tips plate. The pork was OK (lacked any real smoked flavor), but the tri-tips tasted like they had been dipped directly in smoked flavoring. I had the ribs and chicken plate..the ribs tasted good, a little too much sauce on them, but the chicken was dry and pretty flavorless (other than the sauce on it). The coleslaw was pretty good, but otherwise, not an overly memorable meal.

The level of barbecue produced in this dive off-the-beaten path near San Diego makes an hours-long road trip worthwhile. To say it is mouth-watering describes only part of the story. It is eye-watering, and tongue-watering, ear-watering...what have you. All of the senses get involved here. There is even a still that falls over the place. Like you are in a church or library. Although the owner treats people with golden oldies from the 60s and 70s, the people sitting in this dark and dank little cafe seemed singularly focused on their food. As well they should. And there is a congregational atmosphere here. For sure, this qualifies as 'soul' food. Specifics: Brisket that is tender and deeply flavored (call ahead, they run out of this), juicy and smoky BBQ chicken, ribs...the ribs are like 'where-have-you-been-all-my- life?' good. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. Sides are a nice complement to the meat, but the meat is the reason to come here. Mac and cheese, beans, and corn bread are good supporting characters, but not the star by any means (so don't be disappointed). Still, worth trying. You need something to eat with the meat. Prices are on the high side, but reasonable considering the location (near San Diego, albeit in a sketchy strip mall), and the quality of what you get. Bring cash. They take cards but cash is easier and faster, and there is always a line.Across the way is an annex to the restaurant, a food stand owned by the same guy that sells only fried items. That's where you go to get their delicious fried okra. They will bring it to you. Just let them know you will be dining at the restaurant. That's also where you will use the restroom.Get something for the road! You won't regret it.

This restaurant has other locations in San Diego, this one is located in the shopping mall in front of Bonita Vista High School and across the Southwestern College. It is an all-you-can-eat place that has 2 main courses: A1 or A2 and during 2 hours you can order whatever is in the selected course. The meat selection is good, includes many types of beef, chicken and pork. The premium A1 also has some seafood. The only thing it makes it different from the other places in Convoy area is that here you have less types of side dishes and also there is no lettuce to wrap the meat, only salad. The service is very fast, as soon you get the table they start to serve and bring the food very fast. The price is cheaper than the ones in Convoy area, but the drinks are expensive. It is definitely a place to go when you are craving for meat.

Located ten minutes east of Downtown San Diego, Cali Comfort BBQ is quickly becoming known to locals outside of East County as the go-to destination for Slow Smoked Barbecue and San Diegan Hospitality! At Cali Comfort BBQ in the heart of Spring Valley, we
Tonight we went to Cali Comfort during Happy Hour to enjoy a dinner. Socorro our server was so nice as she took our order for 2 Pacifico beers at only $3.00. We ordered a Brisket Dinner plate which had delicious and tender BBQ Brisket, with some BBQ Beans, Jalapeno Corn Bread Muffin, Crispy Seasoned French Fries, and some wonderful Jalapeno BBQ Sauce. Tiffany the Food Runner also brought out our other orders which included a Pulled Pork Taco, because it was Taco Tuesday Night, and some Crispy Chicken Wings with Celery and Carrots, which were also very good. But the Big Star of the night was the homemade Peach Cobbler with Ice Cream. There are no words I can say to explain to you how tasty and the unbelievable flavors this dessert has. You have to come in to Cali Comfort just for this dessert ! Happy Hour was again a Pleasure !

Very busy place. Food is good and reasonably priced. To avoid waiting for a table, eat in the bar. The place gets crowded around 4 pm. The Margaritas are very good as is the triple berry cake. I also like the titos punch. Not much of a draft beer selection.
