The Candlestick Freehouse and Restaurant - A traditional Pub renowned for excellent food and a superb wine list, is located in the picturesque hamlet of West End near Essendon in Hertfordshire. Being located in such a peaceful setting allows for a relaxin
Went for a family meal having previously enjoyed the food at The Candlestick. Sadly the day we visited the chef must have been having an off day. The fish and chips were soggy and greasy, the peas dry and shrivelled. The veggie lasagne was heavy and uninspiring. It's always embarrassing leaving food on the plate, but it was just so hard to finish such a disappointing meal. I felt bad recommending it. I know The Candlestick can do much better.

We called in here for an early dinner. Iâd driven past many times but never called in. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The menu was varied and very reasonably priced. All of the food was excellent. We really couldnât fault anything, and we will definitely return.

A friendly, welcoming pub in the heart of Digswell. Located right next to Welwyn North train station, offering a range of drinks including McMullen's ales and a selection of wines. And fresh homemade food from our new menu and ever changing specials list
Went as a party of eight on 19th April 2019.When we booked we were told that they going to be busy so they recommended that we pre ordered our meals before we went. When we arrived there very few in the restaurant and we had missed out on the specials as we had already ordered our food.Food was average.Hi NicholasThanks for visiting and for sharing some feedback.I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy the food. We always aim to be far above 'average,' and our recipes have all been carefully put together by our chefs.I'm sorry that you missed out on the specials, but we do offer quite a range on our regular menu to choose from too. We recommend our larger tables pre-order their food as it ensures a faster and better service for them and our other tables on the day. Sadly it does mean that our guests can miss out on our delicious specials (we do post specials menus online but these can change frequently so it's not recommended on a pre-order). Unfortunately it's a difficult compromise between quicker service and a wider range of choice but slower service.I hope that you will visit us again so we have a chance to show you our above average food,Kind regardsDan

I am not saying that the food is the best in the world, however, it is very good the fish being exceptional. What makes for a great experience is the quality of the staff including chef which all obviously emanates from the Management. Highly recommend. We were looked after by Kath and Ryan and as always special consideration given to my 93 year old Mother. Kath excels in that besides her hospitality skills has obvious expertise including the Heimlich manouevere which is good to know considering a stick in the thoroat experience recently. Way above the average pub for a meal outHi there John, Thank you so much for your kind words, it fills us with such pride to have had such a positive impact on your visit here. We cant wait to see you again and to ensure that every visit is as good as this was.Kind regards,Ryan

The White Hart has recently reopened following a change of ownership and full refurbishment. The White Hart is now owned by brothers Tom & James Bainbridge who are known in the local area for their success at The Tilbury, Datchworth. The White Hart has be
Although we have dined at The White Hart in the past, this was our first visit since the refurbishment. It was an impromptu private lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary, before a family party two days later. I was hesitant when I read the Tripadvisor description which says that the restaurant serves "light lunches" but I telephoned and was assured that the Tripadvisor description was wrong; the same menu applies to lunch and dinner. The restaurant was not busy (in fact, it was nearly empty) and we received a warm welcome and efficient, pleasant whilst unobtrusive service throughout from Ellen. My wife is wheat intolerant so a lot of the menu was 'out of bounds' but there was still enough to choose from. The food was excellent and beautifully presented.Would I go again? Yes. Would I recommend it to friends? Yes.Wow, thank you for leaving such a humbling review! Our team are always so honoured to help guests celebrate their special day, and it appears we have made a positive impression since your last visit. I shall pass the feedback on to Ellen, who will be delighted you had such an enjoyable experience. Thank you again for taking the time to leave this review, and we look forward to welcoming you (and possibly your friends) back in the future!Thank youAdam

Visited in late afternoon with two aduts and two young children. Place was virtually deserted and nobody came to show us to a table for several minutes (I think the only waiter / server was on the phone). It's a gastropub rather than a restaurant; wide-ranging printed menu and well-presented food. Very good for young children, with high chairs available (though the waiter apologised for having run out of crayons with the child's menu!) - the three-year-old loved the docor with models of taxi, steam locomotive, motor bike, fire engine etc around the walls.

A family lunch with my brother and his wife was excellent. Nothing is too much trouble for Laurent and his staff. Two of us had the fish platter, really plentiful and tasty, those with a roast loved it. Accompanying wine chosen by Laurent was ideal. We will be back.
