We visited Verdun as part of our tour of important WWI marks. We stayed in Les Jardins du Meuse Hotel. Lovely hotel and stunning setting (albeit dreadful beer and broken wifi). The restaurant was full, therefore, we ventured into the town and found what looked like a good brasserie at the side of the river: Coeur de Blé.It proved to be dreadful. I went for a set three course meal. My wife and son just main meals. My starter arrived reasonably quickly. Then after about 30 minutes my sonâs main meal arrived â not as described. Then about 45 minutes later my wifeâs and my main meals arrived. My wifeâs meal was just okay but lacked sufficient of the rather bland sauce to go with the perfectly ordinary chicken. My steak with shallots was chewy and seriously lacking in sauce. I could not swallow some of it.Then after what was an interminably long time our desserts arrived. I had ordered iles flottantes. This proved not to be a poached méringue floating on vanilla custard - rather three large cubes of (I presume) méringue albeit rather dense in texture, jammed into what looked like a short jam jar with some yellow fluid below. I did not eat it.The house red wine was not too expensive but not too pleasant either. The service: slow, oh so very slow. I mean glacially slow.Fawlty Towers would put this place to shame. I wish I could say that this restaurant was a curateâs egg. But the only redeeming feature was the view. Avoid it.
