Stopped on a road trip of upper south island for coffee. Long macchiato in a Murchison pub cafe?? Absolutely - and very good too. But the home made steak and guinness pie... oh m word - outstanding! This is t place to stop off especially on a cold day. Friendly service too. Well done guys.

We went to this little place for lunch after finishing The Old Ghost Trail mountain bike route. The service was fantastic and the coffee was excellent. They even served C4 coffee. All of us ordered fish and chips which tasted great. Just had to write a review because we enjoyed it so much and would definitely recommend it.

We were driving through Murchison considering where to stop for a bite to eat. We decided to check out the Hampden hotel as we hadn't eaten here before. It is your typical pub from the outside and were expecting your typical uncomfortable pub vibe where the locals all drinking beer would stare you down as you enter (as has been our experience with just about every other pub we have been in to in the past) not this one though. We were warmly greeted and the pub had a really pleasant vibe. It was warm and cozy with the fire going and lots of familys and other individuals spread out at tables enjoying themselves. The service was friendly with a smile and the menu very inexpensive and extensive. We were immediately impressed. I ordered the steak sandwhich, and hubby ordered the loaded wedges. And loaded were they! The meals were cooked, plated and served very timely, were of massive portion and appealing. The food was Devine and good quality. One of the best steak Sammy's I have ever had. Free water available on the tables which was a nice touch. We were really happy with our experience and will be back to try other menu items next time we pass through. This venue gets a tick of recommendation from us.
