Country pub on the A128 Brentwood-Ongar Road, Ongar, Essex.
Regretfully not as good as last time, and that was only average. It was definitely chilly in the bar and there was no fire. We ordered two steak and kidney pudding with peas mash and gravy. These were delivered within 20 minutes and looked appetizing on the plate. However, the pastry was very hard and the filling was full of gristle and for £12.95 didn't represent value at all. On top of that, they didn't have any Colemans mustard.I have had better steak puddings in a greasy spoon for half the cost and only a few miles from The Stag. The service was good and the chef did apologise but I will not return.

Having had an awful experience, in a nearby hotel, we and our dog were welcomed with open arms here. A pleasant, cosy traditional pub, lovely publican and good food. It was the new chefs first day so things were a little up in the air but we had a good, well prepared meal. We had a light lunch and tea and returned in the evening for a meal. With our tale of woe we were invited to return the next day to show off the dog we had come to collect. We were even given complementary morning coffee. I was almost in tears after our earlier hotel rejection and Karen, her husband and staff made us so welcome. Thank you to everyone. If we ever come back for another Rumanian dog we'll asking if you do rooms.

As a diagnosed coeliac i don't often bother with afternoon teas. But a friend booked her birthday celebration at Mulberry House,so I planned to go along. I informed them of my dietary requirements & confirmed the day before. I didn't expect too much as,elsewhere,I've just been served with whatever was available from a supermarkets' free from range of cakes. So,I was delighted to be served, without the usual 20 questions, with my own cake stand of gluten free sandwiches & delicious, proper fancy gluten free cakes, that looked as beautiful as everyone else's! A great success for Mulberry House staff and-almost-more than I could eat!!

My partner bought me here as a spontaneous lunch date treat and my gosh we fell in love. He ordered the steak sandwich and it was just perfection! I enjoyed a pimms and a cheese and pickle as we sat on the river watching the ducks! Amazing location and I cannot stop thinking about the chips made in truffle oil. Absolutely unreal.. cannot wait to return. We also love that the talented chef owns the place! Fab story behind this establishment .. hats off to you! X

We took my Mum to the Kings Head for lunch as our son was over visiting from abroad. We hadn't booked but arrived around 12:30pm and luckily there was availability for a table. The staff were all very friendly, there was a specials menu and the normal everyday menu with a good choice of food. Three of us had the soup and one had the scotch egg for starters, then we chose the gnocchi, chicken caesar salad and fish and chips for our mains. The food was absolutely delicious, couldn't fault it at all. There was a nice atmosphere in the restaurant and what with the excellent service and good food we spent a very nice couple of hours in there. The restaurant started to fill up and was fairly busy for a Wednesday lunchtime, which shows it is popular. We would definitely go to the Kings Head again the next time we are in Ongar.Hello MrsSandraL,Thank you for the review! We're glad you had such a pleasant experience with us. We look forward to potentially seeing you again next time you're in Ongar.Kind Regards,Donal

First visit today, drove from Brentwood because of the excellent reviews. Went for the Sunday roast which was very nice. Warm welcome, excellent service, all the staff are very friendly and look happy in their work - must have a nice boss! Neither me or my wife like parsnips or carrots which comes as standard so next time we will express a preference for vegetables. I had the pork but did order an extra slice which costs another £2.50, my wife had the sirloin which consisted of two quite thin slices, for £16 I think there should have been a little more meat on the plate, we know for next time. The pub itself has a lovely setting, spotlessly clean with a fantastic atmosphere, friendly people and a real genuinely nice county pub, very busy which says it all and also has nice outdoor seating areas, back soon

Four of us visited last week for our monthly get together. This is a really picturesque pub in a beautiful setting surrounded by a lovely garden a ample car parks. The pub interior is great, mind the beam! The service was just right being friendly , welcoming and efficient. The food was something else. Two of our group ordered salmon and remarked that it was the probably best salmon dish they had ever been served. The beetroot tart got full marks from our vegetarian member. I had Hunters chicken that had been prepared in a turine and also got full marks from me.

The Green Man is a real gem of a pub in the English countryside, situated in the ancient village of Toot Hill, Essex. Owned and run by parters Lee Wright & Tracey Watts and managed by Nikolaus Greig. Having recently taken over the running of The Green Man
We are so happy that this establishment has been taken over by Mr Lumpti. He is the owner chef, a very humble friendly guy. He is an excellent chef, my wife had an exceptional Dover Sole and I had a superb Roast beef. Brenda, our waitress looked after us really well, she remembered us from two years ago when we were regulars. We have no hesitation in recommending this venue for Sunday lunch and we look forward to trying the weekday offering.
