Kohinoor of Kerala

I came across this restaurant as my favourite Thai restaurant nearby closed down last year as that's where I usually went for dinner when in Portswood, but I found a great substitute with this place. I had an early dinner and came in when it opened for dinner at 6pm, the restaurant became almost full by 7pm and this was on a Wednesday so it's obviously popular. It's not a big restaurant, it has comfortable decor and quiet surroundings, ideal for couples and friends. I chose a vegetarian chick pea dish and cauliflower baji which was delicious, I ate it all too quickly it was so good. There is a lot of choice on the menu, for both meat eaters and vegetarians. I didn't see the dessert menu, just had main meal. I recommend this Indian restaurant for anybody who loves curry, will return when back in the area which isn't often, but worth it.

Been looking for a new local Indian takeaway since moving to dibden and I was not disappointed! The lamb jalfrezi was delicious, nice and spicy with tender lamb and the chicken tikka masala equally as good! Not runny and no water gathering at the edges of the plate like you can get with most induan takeaways! They don't deliver which is a bit of a downer but I'm happy to drive as it's tastes do good!

We arrived at the restaurant and had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated even though we were one of only two couples in the restaurant at the time! We wandered through looking for a waiter and no sign. Eventually he arrived and seated us only to take another 20 minutes to offer us drinks. Eventually we got our drinks and the waiter disappeared for 15 minutes again before finally taking our order. The food came out after over an hour of being sat in the restaurant, and was decent enough but perhaps more-so due to the fact we were wasting away by that point! This restaurant is perfect if you want to sit and listen to the same song for an hour on repeat or better still, if you’re on a diet and want to smell nice food without getting served it then go for it!

Upon arrival, having booked a reservation online, the staff had no awareness of our group. After a 5 minute embarassing wait, we were shown to a table. The staff had poor English and we struggled to understand what was going on.We did not feel particularly welcome. The service was generally poor being served by a wide range of staff who had little co-ordination between themselves). The options were difficult to understand. I eventually realised that the standard fayre is to go with the set meal (although the a la carte menu was available if you were prepared to wait). We ordered the set meal. The portions were very generous and there was good variety. The quality of food was excellent. If this restaurant could get its customer service better, it could be a 4+ star restaurant.

We ordered a takeaway from here Friday evening. The time got pushed back a couple of times for delivery but thought they would be busy being Friday anyway. Was no problem. The food was delicious, the only quibble would be I didn’t like as much the mint/yogurt dip with the onion bhajis as it wasn’t as it used to be, was much more yogurty. The Bhajis themselves were smaller than they used to be too. The actual curries we all got were fab though, big pieces of chicken and lamb which was really soft. My husband was a bit disappointed with his Keenan nan as there wasn’t much mince filling. No bags on salad from here either as you get from other takeaways. But all in all we both really enjoyed it and it did us 2 dinners

We were visiting Southampton to catch a blues gig. We planned to arrive at about 17:30 to have an early dinner before making our way to the venue. The traffic however had other ideas, and we spent the best part of 90 minutes to complete the last 15 miles of our journey. Having phoned the restaurant, to explain our problem, there was no problem with our table when we arrived. The restaurant was very well appointed and the tables were neat with good quality linen tablecloths and napkins. The cutlery all matched and was obviously quality. Seats and table furnishings were also of good quality. We were one of two parties that arrived within a couple of minutes of each other. Obviously though the other party were frequent patrons and ordered from experience, whereas we took a while to study the comprehensive menu whilst enjoying some poppadums and pickles. There were several dishes to our liking but before ordering we sought advice from our waiter about the strength of chilli heat on dishes marked with chilli icons. The waiter said that any ‘fiery’ or (chilli) ‘hot’ dish could be ordered ‘medium’ which is certainly to our preference. Too much chilli heat disables taste-buds and you end-up not appreciating some of the more subtle and complex flavours of good Indian cuisine. Our waiter was most helpful and told us a little about some of the dishes we had under consideration. Finally we placed an order for the Lamb Rajasthani Lal Manns, and the Chicken Chattanad. Whilst the waiter was there we asked about one of the four pickles served with the poppadums. This was a quite spicy red pickle apparently made with finely chopped onion, flavoured with fenugreek leaves and red chilli powder mixed together in a little tomato ketchup. The result was excellent and really warmed the mouth. The almost obligatory mango chutney was of good quality and not watered-down as we have found in other Indian restaurants. There was a short wait before our starter arrived. Our starter was a sharing plate of tandoori fish: there was dark battered monk fish, light battered chunky fish (maybe sole), large prawns, and small chunky salmon fillets. It was all beautifully cooked: certainly not overcooked and varied from a very light heat on the more meaty fish to quite strong spicy heat on the prawns. The tandoori spices are a particular favourite of mine, and the plate was very much had a good tandoori taste. It wasn’t a very large plate but it was certainly very fulfilling rather than just filling. There were two dips: one was a green mint yoghurt dip whereas the other was tamarind based; the latter was particularly good. A small salad looked good but I left my partner to enjoy that alone.Another short wait heralded the arrival of our mains. The chicken was a whole marinated chicken breast on the bone cooked within an ace of being perfect, served sliced, with a very complex and dense sauce. The tastes included coconut and star anise. The chicken was light and moist, very tender and was obviously fresh meat which was freshly cooked. The lamb was in a medium strength sauce, and very tasty. The meat was beautifully tender, well-trimmed: I only had one piece with some fat attached. The dish was obviously well prepared with the lamb being slow-cooked for some time. There was a small serving of rice with the chicken and we had ordered plain naan bread, which was used to full effect in mopping-up the lamb sauce. We shared the dishes which gave us both a taste and the experience. The dishes were not too big and I expect some patrons may look at them and feel a bit underwhelmed. The food was very rich though, so by the time we had finished we were both well-fed and my partner had no room for dessert. Talking of desserts: I had spotted kulfi (Indian ice-cream made with condensed milk) on the menu. I really enjoyed this pistachio flavour dessert: it was very delicate and had a definite sorbet-like texture. The mixed nuts, including some crushed pistachio sprinkled on top, added some crunchy texture. We didn’t have any alcoholic drinks as we were driving so we settled for lime and soda. We declined the offer of some specialist tea’s and coffee’s and the bill was about £25 each.Service was excellent, informative and attentive, but not in your face, and rewarded with a tip. This was a really great experience and if we visit Southampton again we will certainly look at going back here.
