I seldom write reviews for restaurants, unless they're outstandingly good or atrociously bad. I didn't expect a Thai restaurant in Whakatane to have the same kind of food as you'd get in Bangkok, but three things lead me to write this review. 1. The food I ordered (Chu Chee Kung, one of my favourite Thai dishes) bore no resemblance at all to the Thai dish by this name, b) all the vegetables and the shrimps were obviously out of a frozen bag, c) the person who cooked this food cannot possibly have attended any kind of cooking school anywhere.Possibly the worst supposedly Thai food I've ever had anywhere.

The new Hong Kong has been here for 30 years, and hasn't changed in 30 years. Decor, menu and Ada. Lol.Unfortunately the food hasn't moved with the times, still quite stodgy and greasy, Service was kinda off too, chef missed two meals out of our table and at payment only was offered one free wine for reparation. As always the proprietor was her brisk self.We only go because it's the only restaurant with big tables.

I love theses little triangle veggie sushi no other sushi place makes them, everything else is really fresh and tasty too and consistent. Service is efficient if not cheerful but I'm there for triangles so it's not a drama.

We go to Mr Sushi when we are hungry and in a hurry. We have been often since they opened and we will keep going back. Beautiful food, lovely service and a great value for money.
DON'T GO THRU MATATA WITHOUT STOPPING!!!This is a MUST!!! Kai is just delish. The fried-bread donuts are the shiz, the burgers are tumeke awesome, you need to get in quick with the pies as they go like hot cakes because they are THAT good. The service by any of the staff is magic - you cant beat a local friendly face, heart and a passion for their community. This team is fantastic and made a non local like me feel welcomed, it was greatly appreciated. Coffee is excellent, and though it is a koha (u decide how much) it is a made with love and excellent to a tee so anything you offer above $4.50 (cost everywhere else and some) is well deserving. Anything less and I reckon ur abusing the term koha (gift/you decide). I've seen one lady offer $2-really! That doesn't even pay for the cup.
