It's a guilty pleasure but I do enjoy Gordon Ramsay's Nightmare Kitchen reruns. Yes it's formulaic. Yes I'm sure most of the drama is created for the show. Yes I do not see the need for all of the beeped out F bombs, and I have to admit I always thought it was a set up, that no food service establishment could possibly be as bad as the ones Ramsay based his show on. But for the second time I was proven wrong. These places do exist and Sakura Teppanyaki and Sushi is one of them. We show up for reservation and inform the hostess that we are attending the show across the street and it's important that we have completed the meal by a certain time. We have allowed ourselves an hour and a half, which seems plenty of time when you're ordering meals consisting mostly of raw fish.My first impression as I walk in is, "This place is really dingy, particularly for a Japanese-oriented restaurant." They seat us around and empty "Benihana" grill. Ten minutes later, and not a single knife and spatula-wielding, wisecracking cook in sight, we realized at this pace we will not make the show and requested another table. Since we seldom consciously decide to relive nightmares so I will be brief. My friend and I both ordered sushi roll entrées which were neither fresh nor tasty. In fact, I would've been disappointed if I'd ordered this food at an AM/PM gas station. The teriyaki chicken was also ordered and according to the consumer was bland, runny, and tasteless. Hmmm, maybe my sushi roll wasn't so bad in comparison after all.The good news -- we were on time for the show.

This is a really no frills pho place. They have all the normal pho options, banh mi sandwiches, and standard drinks you can find at most Vietnamese restaurants. The pho itself is ok. There's nothing spectacular about the broth and it hits the spot as a warm bowl of noodles when it's cold out. There doesn't seem to be a large difference between regular and large sizes aside from the bowl size and amount of soup and meats but it could just be my imagination.

I ordered take out of their version of vegetable tempura. Normally, in the place itself, the fare was pretty decent; they said they changed the oil every couple of days (crucial). Also crucial was the amount of breading used and the time spent in the fryer. This time when I got home, it looked like the cook had forgotten that he had food in the fryer as it was way overfried with small vegetables and huge amounts of breading. It was awful. Plus I had spent extra for more vegies which they reluctantly added.I took it back and complained, so they gave me a refund, which was nice of them. Still, the place has the best fried calamari around in my opinion, which they have not as yet over-fried. It's worth a try.
Right next to the Century Movie theaters in downtown Redwood City is the Green Leaf Asian Bistro. The food is delicious, very reasonably priced and the atmosphere is quiet. The Bahn Mi sandwiches are delicious, super fresh baguette, your choice of protein and grated carrots and special sauce. Jalapeno slices are optional. It is a very relaxing place to eat, many of the nearby restaurants are chaotic. Highly recommended

This is my 2nd favorite Japanese restaurant in Redwood City. The owner is nice and always greets with a friendly smile behind the sushi counter. The fish is always fresh. Serving size of the fish though may be slightly below average. They have a good selection of fish on the chalkboard which is the fish they have fresh that's off the normal menu. They also usually have raw oysters on the half shell which a lot of other Japanese restaurants don't always have.

Located in downtown Redwood City, this place is convenient if you were going to the movie theater. However, the food is average, the Korean beef ribs tough, and two of the items offered in the dinner combo were , according to the server, not too popular. In the middle of our meal, we were given our check and, even though there wasn't a waiting line, "encouraged" to leave. No relaxed meal here!

We were seated promptly and our orders were taken aa soon as we put our menus down. Our appetizer- satay- came out quickly and was good. So far so good. Two of four entrees came out. It took another five minutes for the rest of the meals to arrive. The catfish was completely overcooked. The eggplant was bland. The prawns in clay pot were about 5 prawns in glass noodles that were mostly stuck in a blob. Some celery and onions completed a non-descript entree. The peanut sauce over chicken is exactly that- a pile of chicken with sauce. The tango mango was a sweet concoction that its patron enjoyed. We were pleased by the option for brown rice. The place is clean and conveniently located( if you can find parking).I would look for something else despite the high rating.

The food was amazing. I had the Pumpkin Pork Stew here. My friends had Rangoon Noodle and Tea Leaf Salad. All the dishes were yum! Service was a little slow, probably because it was crowded at the time.Thank you for loving our cuisine. The Pumpkin Pork Stew is one of our favorite house specialties too, we're glad you enjoyed it. We apologize for the slow service though and have noted that to go over with our team. Otherwise, thank you for sharing with us!

We ordered the tempura combo with miso soup, salad, and rice. Every bite was scrumptious yet light! The ingredients were fresh, plate colorful--we were very pleased! I am not a big sushi eater, but my family gave a big "thumbs up". We were on vacay but came back the very next day for more! Seems like a local favorite because the place can get packed. The prices are very reasonable and the service is great too.
