Thai Nam Phet II

Thai Nam Phet II continues the legacy of its parent restaurant: delicious food that never disappoints. Some of my favourite appetisers include the curry puffs, chicken satay, and golden triangle (fried tofu with sweet chilli sauce), though all the appetisers are so good you could replace a few of them for a meal. As far as main courses go, the pra ram and tamarind duck are unbeatable, though my family vouches for the massaman curry and the pineapple fried rice as well.

Narin Thai

Reviewed By David M

Three years ago, I reviewed Narin Thai, and expressed major reservations about the service - which, at the time, was indeed spotty. Since then, Tommy has adeptly handled the restaurant. He's not there on Tuesdays, but his substitute on Tuesdays also has been bringing great service with a smile the past few months. We still avoid the restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights, but never had a problem on Sundays, or Tuesdays to Thursdays. As for the food, specials are only offered on Fridays and Saturdays (according to the menu, so we've never seen them). The standard menu is fine for what it is. The portion size seems a bit smaller from when they first opened, but the food is as tasty as always. Among the appetizers, we especially like the Thai spring rolls with a unique peach sauce with bits of pepper. The standard dishes (offered in chicken, beef, or shrimp) are good. The Thai iced tea is excellent. Bit disappointing they don't offer pho, a traditional Thai soup. There are three Thai restaurants in the region, and we feel this is the best. The other one in Newton was too pushy in encouraging purchase of drinks, desserts, etc. The third one, in Hamburg, made us nauseous just walking in, from the smell of the then-new carpeting that had been installed. We also felt the food just wasn't as good, though others have differed in opinion. Other pluses: dinner for two can be as low as $25 including tax and tip, and the nice ambience and quiet - no TV, interesting atmosphere, transporting you out of Newton and to another place and time. The chef is like Charlie in Charlie's Angels - you never see her - and does close the place on a whim, like one day when we got there and there was no sign, and another summer day where we were greeted with a sign on the door saying "Too hot to cook!" So best to call first and ensure they are open - and if you have to use the bathroom, be prepared - it's a steep staircase descending down to get there.

Chun Bo

Reviewed By yumabatguano

We have been looking for good Chinese food ever since the Hawaii fountain closed years ago. For a long time it was Daxxon in walden NY. However, it was sold recently and is not very good anymore. Our search brought us to Newton and Chun Bo to see how they are. While the service was a bit slow, it was not terrible. As for the food, we were very pleased with both the taste and portions. The won-ton soup we really like at other places had a dark broth. The soup here had a light , refreshing broth that did not taste like it came from a can. The won-tons were very flavorful and cooked nicely. The beef sticks were really good and had a sticky glaze that was slightly sweet. We really enjoyed them. Our dinners came out and we were surprised at the portion size. The boneless ribs and ribs with bones were very good and the other entree with beef, chicken and shrimp and veggies was very tasty. The veggies were nicely done and still crisp. The fried rice was the best I have had in quite some time. Slightly smokey from proper wok cooking and a nice balance of egg, vegetables and pork. The bill came to just over 60 bucks with desert and appetizers for the 4 of us and we had a ton of left overs. All in all I would say it was a good price for the meals we got. We are already planning to return with friend to try other menu items.
