Things to do in Mitaka

I first visited the Peppermint Café in Kichijoj way back in 1988. Back then it was a funky little place with big soft old chairs, great food and cool staff. It has changed over the years and is now a more upmarket restaurant but the food is still great and the staff cool and charming. Tonight we had the somtam (papaya salad) which was medium spicy by Thai standards and probably very spicy by Japanese standards. The morning glory was good but could have had more garlic and chilli. The spring rolls were tightly wrapped and very good. The grillled chicken was very tasty. They have a selection of craft beers on the menu now and I believe the restaurant has become no smoking. (Or maybe no one was smoking tonight). Very nice dinner.

On the outside, Gutara looks like your average ramen shop but their unique variation (called gutara-men) is unlike any other I've tried. You can't miss the place because it's marked by a huge, white banner reading "Gutara" in Japanese characters. There is also generally a smiling employee outside ushering customers in. The closest station - Musashi-sakai - is a little far, but it's definitely worth the trip. The restaurant is easily accessible by both bus and bike.Their standard ramen is a generous portion of noodles in a tonkotsu-style broth topped with green onions, ground sesame and pumpkin seeds, and generous slices of juicy charshu pork and a halved, hard boiled egg. They offer free kaidama (second portion of noodles) and free dessert for ladies who order ramen. For those who aren't into slurping noodles, they also have a delicious charshu-don (rice bowl topped with sliced pork) for only 300 yen which is a great bargain. The employees there are really friendly and speak a little English. Don't be afraid to sit at the counter and talk to them! They play an eclectic mix of music, from 90's pop and rock to Japanese reggae. The restaurant is clean, and open-air during the warmer months. Everything at Gutara is run simply and without frills, but they do it right and they do it well.

We have been here a number of times when we visit family in Kichijoji and we keep on returning. It is a little hard to find being on the 4th. floor in a building between two alleys off Sun Road to the left but it is definitely worth finding. It is a Korean style yakiniku barbecue restaurant with central charcoal cooking at the table. We usually order a few different types of meat and vegetables to grill and my favorite, bebimbap, which is rice with meat, vegetables and an egg cracked in at the end, cooked in a stone bowl which is so hot the rice goes crispy where it is in contact with the bowl. Mix in the Korean chilli paste and away you go! Beer is the best accompaniment. The staff are always very attentive checking out the state of the charcoal fire and replacing the wire griddle at times when it gets some burnt bits stuck to it. There is an older guy on the staff who always makes a fuss over my grandson and has been known to give him presents to play with.It must be popular with the locals because it is always crowded.

because it is just okay, three stars rather than four - as has been said, Indochinese crossover seen through Japanese eyes, served on aluminum trays, very garden-canteen like. I had the set lunch (the first of 4 alternatives) with iced Oolong, minced chicken with rice and fried egg Thai style (needed additional seasoning!), clear turnip soup, and an unfortunately really chewy Vietnamese spring roll. But it's a cool place, crowded, with modern music, beautifully situated in one of my favorite Tokyo parks, and the service is friendly. Prices are maybe a bit too high for the food (my set lunch was $12) but otherwise adequate, and it is a great alternative for visitors of the Ghibli Museum - it is on the way back if one cuts through Inokashira Park (which one should) to catch the Chuo Line from Kichijoji rather than Mitaka.
