Ho Mei Kitchen

This was the first really disappointing meal I had at Ho Mei. Usually the food is excellent. They had to defrost the chicken for the dish as it was around nine in the evening that I went in and the chicken was dried out and over cooked when they prepared the dish. It was slightly hard and not juicy like it normally is when served. They need to stop trying to close early and clean up as after my order, they got two big orders around closing time and then really had to cook. The Fried Rice, Egg Roll and Rice were properly made and tasted good. The service is always welcoming and friendly.

Bottom Line:Came here for lunch. Will be back for dinner soon. Pork Rice dish made with real tender pork shoulder, not that kooky red stuff you see at ubiquitous American-ized Chinese restaurants. No soy on the table. Proud owner-chef couple. Seemed authentic. I had the Whole Crispy Red Snapper. I left nothing but the bones…and I even ate some of those. Go here and eat.Standard Disclaimer: I’m a first generation Italian-American, who likes Asian food, as long as it doesn’t burn out my insides. Stopped here after an extended appt at my favorite Hackensack Infusion Suite. 2pm. Needed food, and this place was highly regarded. I see why. Very authentic Thai / Lao food. There must be at least six signs indicating that their spice is at least four times spicier than traditional Asian food that you usually eat. “if you don’t like spicy, please don’t order spicy”. You don’t have to tell me twice. I ordered the Whole Red Snapper, crispy fried. It came covered with vegetables; some I recognized, some I had no idea what they were, but they don’t sell them at any grocery store I shop. Of course, I ordered no spice, as I am in “spice training”. Spice Training is like the Olympics. You know how there are some kids who have been tumbling and twisting since they were kids, so tumbling is no big deal. Same thing with spice. I applaud the folks who grew up eating Serrano and Habenero, and other red and green chiles that don’t even need a name—they’re just wicked hot. I like the idea of eating wicked hot, but alas, I’m not physically wired that way. So, mild spice it is…but I’m training, so wait until the next Olympics. The fish, while delicious, could have bulked up, as I thought I was a bit lanky for its $30 price tag. It’s my fault. Crispy Whole Red Snapper was not on the lunch menu. They told me so, as well as the price to satisfy my request (I didn’t think it was too much of as stretch as the dish was on the dinner menu as a special). Whatever. I enjoyed it. My wife had a pork rice dish with a Thai basil sauce that was very good. As mentioned before, Asians and pork have a love / love relationship, so it is no wonder that the dish contained shredded real pork and not that chewy garbage normally served in my downtown corner Chinese joint. Once again, the dish could have bulked up with more pork, but overall, it was more than adequate for a lunch special. So, come here and eat. We’ll be back, the next time we’re in town.

Stopped by for dinner on a Saturday night. We arrived before 7 pm and within twenty minutes the entire place was packed. It seems like reservations are the smart way to go on weekends since the restaurant is on the smaller side.Food and service were exceptional. Dessert was a satisfying surprise (try the red bean ice cream), and prices were very affordable. Décor really adds up to a calming dining experience. Plenty of street parking in the area. Very recommended, will definitely return.

Came here with friends. First Thai restaurant in Bergen County. Very nice atmosphere. A lot of seating too. We had Pad Thai. Very good but seemed a little oily. We also had the massaman curry which was flavorful and plentiful. It was really good. Friends had a beef in gravy dish that they loved. Slices of beef that were tender. The service was great. Four dishes with tax and tip was $80. Tip: Parking is street parking with meters. Tip: takes reservations.
