Best Asian food near Akumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Find out what Asian restaurants to try in Akumal. Akumal means "Place of the Turtle" in the Mayan language, and if you snorkel here, you just might see one swimming alongside you. (Don’t touch it, though. That’s prohibited by law.) You’ll definitely see coral and beautiful fish in the clear, sparkling waters. This tourist-friendly little town is about an hour south of Cancun—but it seems light-years away.

Restaurante Maiko

We wish we could have gone back to this restaurant as the food was amazing. With many different options it left us wanting to try everything. Our waiter Manuel was very accommodating and one of the best waiters we found on the resort. Very welcoming experience and would recommend everyone who visits the resort to make this one of the first places they attend for dinner.

Bamboo is located next to Portofino on the North side of the market - dining area of White Sands Grand Palladium Resort. It appears to me that Bamboo is one of the larger restaurants in this complex. You begin your dining experience overlooking a lovely Koi Pond and the large swimming pool, wooden walking paths with bridges over the water. You are served a light beverage consisting of a Mojito mix with green tea. This begins your Asian fusion cuisine. We ordered a plate of spring rolls, wonton and salmon toast to share. (We ordered the soup of the day, but our waiter was new and not very experienced, and the soup was not served to us, so I can not comment on that.) We ordered the teriyaki beef for the entrée. I love teriyaki. This was very good, served on a bed of steamed vegetables with white rice. The salad bar is plentiful with veggies and fruit choices. Meat on the salads included Thai seasoned chicken, turkey and Ahi Tuna to choose from. The sauces on the salads are very flavorful. No need to add the flavored soy sauces offered as dressings, but they are there for you to try to add variety to the taste. The sushi bar is fresh. Wonderful flavors. The desserts were disappointing. One of the dessert selections is ice cream. The night we dined there, the choices for ice cream were chocolate and strawberry. That's less than stellar. The other desserts were types of mousse and gelatins. I ordered the chocolate tart with lemon cream. I'm not sure what I got, but it wasn't a tart. More like a dense mousse of chocolate and a lighter mousse of a very light lemon. My husband ordered a banana chocolate dessert, but was served something different - another mousse type dessert. (Again our not experienced waiter. Not his fault.) The service was exceptional, even with the inexperience waiter. For a busy restaurant, we received lots of special attention. I recommend that you go to dinner early if you don't want to stand in line. The Italian restaurant, Portofino, shares the same entrance with Bamboo. You will have to wait in line for the people ahead of you who might be going to Portofino instead of Bamboo. That was a little irritating ~ Portofino is a smaller restaurant, so people are waiting to be seated. You can get right into the larger Bamboo restaurant with no or very short waiting, but you have to stand for a long time waiting for the Portofino customers to get out of your way. Management should think of a better way to get he Bamboo customers out of the waiting line and into the restaurant.
