My husband and I love this place. It is worth the wait when there is one which is frequent. The menu always changes and I live the variety. Found has always been good every time weâve been there. The atmosphere is wonderful. We go here almost every time we are in Ames.

We set out driving, no destination in mind. We became hungry and consulted our handy Iowa Mom and Pop restaurant guide and found we were close to the hamlet of Gilbert. Neither of us had ever been to Gilbert and the Open Flame's hours indicated they were open, so we decided to try it. We entered and immediately noted that there was only one other couple there and they were finishing up. We asked the waitress if we should stay or go. She explained that they do close between lunch and dinner, but that she was happy to serve us now.The waitress was an out of state student at ISU and she was articulate and kind. She recommended an appetizer platter (all fried delights--don't judge) and we shared a patty melt. You know that sound you make when the food is amazing? Yeah. Best burger we've had in a very looong time. While we waited for our food, we explored the rest of the joint ... the grill your own steak brick pit, the old photos on the wall of vintage Gilbert landmarks and people. All in all a charming place, with great food and college educated wait staff! Score!

We happened in to this restaurant on an evening when they offered an all-you-can-eat Buffet Dinner. The food was better than most buffet restaurants. All food was hot. The options on the buffet was fresh and good quality. Offered a bit of leafy green lettuce in addition to the iceburg lettuce (no idea who eats iceburg lettuce any longer). I think the leafy green lettuce was meant to be used on the hamburgers, but, was OK to use as salad. We were a party of 8 with a baby and were seated in a private area where it was very easy to converse. We had good service even tho we all ordered the buffet. The wait staff returned to check up on us several times. I just wish they had more than one item on the buffet for desert.
I hadn't had one of these in a very long time. It was just like mom's. Hot, fresh, very good. And very filling. Friendly staff. They need more staff. Clean. Nothing fancy, just really good food, from what I got. Very family friendly. Good prices. Home style cooking. Marcydiner tantrum scale of 5/5-no screaming kids.

This location is the greatest, especially Laura. We eat here about once per month as we drive through from Clive, IA to Minnesota passing several P. Ranches along the way. This is the best location and the friendliness people. Laura greets us by name. The Blueberry pizza is great.

Had lunch here with a group of 20. We were seated in the back "Brick Room" like a private party. Nicely repurposed historic brick building. Menu offers lots of down-home style items. I had a reuben sandwich on marbled rye (excellent) and a cup of borscht (very good). A great alternative to anonymous boring fast-food places. Service cheerful (Dawn came out and greeted us personally). Prices very reasonable.
