The city planners in Staunton, Virginia, were very careful to preserve the town's heritage, keeping power lines and cell towers out of view in the historic districts, allowing nothing to interrupt the charm of local restaurants and shops operating out of original Victorian storefronts. Staunton is also the home to the Frontier Culture Museum, The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and the American Shakespeare Center, staging plays at the world's only replica of the Blackfriars Playhouse.

My friend and I were staying in Lexington for a Friday night Virginia Tech football game... and were returning to DCA for him to fly home on Saturday afternoon. We had been talking about where to go for breakfast on Saturday, because there are quite a few nice options on the drive up I-81. He said he wanted blueberry pancakes. And Mrs Rowe's has some of the best... plus they have very good country sausage, one of my favorites. We get there about 7:30 and were seated promptly and our server came quickly with coffee. My friend ordered two blueberry pancakes and an order of toast... and I ordered oatmeal with a side of patty sausage. Unfortunately our server came back with the bad news... no blueberries... so my friend had plain pancakes.Everything was the way it was supposed to be... plenty of hot coffee... and very good food. Some day I'm just going here for dessert... a slice of their wonderful looking pies.

Wednesday night dinner reservations based on the Staunton travel brochure recommendation. On Tuesday, we happened to pass by The Shack...and thought, âwow, did we make a mistake? The building IS a little shack!â Oh, my, goodness...what a treasure! Casual, small, busy, ever-changing small menu of food terms we had to have explained by our server. âWild Salmon Aguachile with strawberry, green tomato, and fish pepperâ (think ceviche) â absolutely amazingly delicious; âDuck Liver Mousse with strawberry rhubarb agrodulce, pickles, and toastâ which probably should have served two but was so good I had no trouble finishing it off myself; âRicotta Ravioli with Surry Ham Bologneseâ house made pasta with the smoothest ricotta filling and sauce with such huge flavor that I wanted more; âWild Sockeye Salmon with sweet peas, morels, nasturtiums, and lemon pea creamâ a delight to savor with hints of, rather than âin your faceâ, flavors.Dessert could not be missed and we chose the interesting âBittersweet Chocolate Semifreddoâ â which our server really could not seem to explain to us but turned out to be like a frozen solid chunk of whipping cream with invisible but tasty bits of chocolate inside and chocolate powder dusting the top. A light, interesting way to end our meal. Cocktails included house twists on the familiar Old Fashioned (they could lose the vinegar infused cherry, but was very good otherwise) and a tasty Negroni using Capelletti instead of Campari. Donât miss The Shack!

I went here for lunch with my daughter today. I was completely surprised from start to finish. The outside doesnât appear to be very appealing but please do not let that keep you from giving this place a chance. The inside is decorated quite nicely and is very clean. The food is farm to table fresh and absolutely delicious!!!The service was prompt and very friendly. On this particular day they had live acoustic music that added the perfect finishing touch. I highly recommend this great little place. You wonât be disappointed!Thank you!! Hope to see you again soon! John

The Clocktower is my choice when I am looking for a good, inexpensive, well-prepared meal. The ambiance is relaxed, the service is quick and cheerful, and the special menu options change frequently. They have a great bakery counter to eat in or take out -- pies and cakes and muffins and Danish and on and on. I particularly like their oatmeal raisin cookies, and always take some away. And the owners are usually on site and willing to help with menu choices or respond to any perceived problems. Not sure why or how some folks recently are unhappy -- or is there a campaign against this very nice place?

The Bistro was the perfect ending for a great day with friends. The drink list covered everyone, and our dishes were delicious. I had the shrimp and grits which were gluten free and outstanding. The portions were large but no one left much on their plate.

This is one of my "go-to" places for lunch when I have out-of-town visitors to the area and they have never disappointed. Besides the tasty food, the staff is super friendly. I'll keep coming back!

This is a very nice place. I was looking for a ma and pa place and I went down the road far enough to find it!! Just what I was looking for!!! A drive in from the 50s was even better than what I was looking for!! They had the old booths, and order trays and drive in area and it had it all!! What a great place!! The food was ok, and the selection was wonderful. The people were friendly too!! Please do not miss this when you are in the area!!!

This restaurant is in the pedestrian-friendly downtown Staunton area. The building has original elements and interesting stained glass. Delicious homemade bread and butter started our meal. We had a dinner item from the daily specials and one from the regular menu, and both were delicious. The beer and wine menu is extensive, and we were offered samples if we needed to make a decision (we didnât but it was an option not often offered). Our server was attentive and informative about the dishes, and the manager stopped by the table to ensure everything was going well. By the time we left at about 7 pm, there was a long wait to get seated, so arriving early is recommended on a Friday.
