Things to do in Portales
I ordered the fried chicken salad with vinegarette dressing and found it to be one of the tastiest chicken salads I have ever eaten. The lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers were cut small, with ample shredded cheese, but the highlight was the delicious, moist and flavorful fried chicken, that was also cut into small pieces. A great place to eat in Portales!
If you love great HOMEMADE ice cream, well this is the place for you!!! My wife and I absolutely LOVE this place. Their handmade ice cream is to die for!!! They also have great sandwiches, and various snacks too. I have known Miss Peg and Landall for many years and they are some of Portales' finest people. This is a great place to bring your friends for an after church snack or your wife for a hot date for ice cream, or just for a special treat. I love that they employ some of the youth from Portales as well. Just fantastic people serving it up for our community!!!Keep it up guys!!! You're the best!
This Subway has improved with time. It's a great location and nice place, but the management the past four or so years has been VERY hands-off; thus, the employees have not only not been trained well (and were not friendly), but the store was often ill-equipped (no cookies, no certain breads, etc.). Had a great visit today. Something must have changed - for the better!

The server was very friendly and courteous while taking our order and the meal was prepared in an old fashioned manner. The cheese was actually melted on the patty and the vegetables were fresh and crisp.
Featuring premiere chuckables like the chuckburger and chuck burrito, you'll wanna chuck it from a moving wagon with excitement. Chuckwagon maintains its commitment to chuck themed foods with a menu made entirely of ground chuck, including the chuckbuns â¢. A signature dish comprised of shredded pork and ground chuck mixed with yeast and baked until brown. All in all cowboy chuckwagon is the kind of place you could chuck too, if you like frisbees, baseball, football, or wagons, there's something for you.
I love pats peanut butter shake!! It is one of my favorites. It's thick and delicious. The green chili cheese hamburger is also a must. Pats is a drive up and get down to order. No place to sit and eat but has that old fashion feel.

This place makes the absolute best steak finger baskets. They have many different items but these are my favorite. My wife loves their cherry-limeade......homemade and simply the best!!!

Small Town Burger Rivals Any Big City⦠In LA or NY I would expect to pay $15+ for this quality of burger. Not so in the little dairy and peanut capital of Portales, New Mexico. We were passing through on business and stopped by the Cattle Baron for lunch.
Took family out for dinner with pretty low expectations. Was very surprised to see "Sauteed Red Fish" as a special on the board, even more surprised when the waitress said it was actually sauteed Rock Fish. Well, whatever, I like them both, so figured I order it and take my chances - if nothing else the salad bar looked great (and it was.) Completely shocked when this wonderful plate of boneless, fresh, juicy fish, lightly sauteed with some onion was delivered. It was Rockfish and it was delectable - and I have eaten a lot of Rockfish. My stepdaughters had the same, along with the loaded bake potato, and were equally impressed. The guys devoured the huge chicken fried steaks. The place itself is a little tired, both on the inside and outside. Our server was very friendly and plates came out pretty quickly with everything hot (a basic premise that, unfortunately, is all too rare!) The menu is large, although it is mainly about protein, of course, but with the excellent salad bar, definitely a good place to go if you need more variation those who lean more vegetarian/healthy eating.

This is usually a dependably good place to eat and have a beer. The food we got was delicious, but they were out if the first three or four things we ordered, so that was disappointing.

The waiter was great... quick and friendly. The prices seem good as well.Unfortunately, we weren't terribly impressed with the food. She had a salad and he the Thai chicken bowl.
