We like Newk's - we go weekly when there is one near us. This is not our "going out for dinner or lunch-it is a special time" place. It is our go to place for reliably fresh food that is prepared on site.Servers are friendly and helpful. Lots of extra's and plenty of self serve drinks. They have a vat of sweet tea made with Splenda. They have things for about every appetite and we like this group of restaurants. Refreshing when traveling!

I was there with the SEWSA conference and several dozen members took up an entire room. The service was as efficient as it could be under these circumstances and the food was outstanding. Way to go, Proud Larry's. I loved your posters and hope to return someday to hear live music.

Snackbar

My husband and I were tired from a long drive and at the "grumpy stage" when we arrived in Oxford on a Football Friday night. We had no dinner reservations, but my husband had eaten at the Snackbar on another business trip and had been pleased. We drove north of town a bit to a strip shopping center. When I saw the location I was doubtful we would be seated. There were folks sitting at outdoor tables in the Mississippi heat, but everyone was smiling. I saw oysters on the halfshell being consumed and lovely plated entrees. Miraculously, the hostess found a tiny 2-top for us inside. It was PACKED. But walking into the place was like walking into one of my favorite New Orleans restaurants. Dark woods and soft ambiance. The French Sav Blanc was nice and reasonably priced. There are regular entrees and "small plates" to choose from. My husband had the french onion soup, and theRoyal Red macaroni and cheese offering. Our wonderful server recommended the Rabbit at my request. It was tender and dark and delicious. We enjoyed a fabulous meal and made some new Missisippi friends at the next table. We will definitely be back to the Snackbar! Kudos to this place for making our night...

Our third visit.First was pretty mediocre. Second was okay, but nothing special. This visit ... every dish was exceptional: Roast duck, sea bass, duck confit, angus sliders, followed by lemoncello, every dish worth coming back for. Drinks and wine were tops.We will be back. If you're not going to dine with a party, I would recommend dropping in to sit at the bar and have an app and a drink.

Our family had a good meal here. Wait staff was great, and the menu variety was excellent. No hesitation in substituting side items, which made each dish customized to our individual tastes. Salmon dish was very good. Filet was ok, but salted too heavily and overwhelmed the flavor. Chicken dish was just ok. All in all a very good experience and we would definitely return.

This restaurant is charming and has a great menu with delicious southern food. I had the Shrimp and Grits for lunch, and my spouse had the Beef PoorBoy. The food was a bit spicy and the portions were huge! We both loved our dishes but couldn’t eat it all. Because we were staying in a hotel, we couldn’t take the leftovers, unfortunately. Our meals came with cornbread muffins (delicious), and lots of ice tea. I especially enjoyed eating the Cheese Grits served under the sautéed Gulf Shrimp.I will fondly remember this lunch for a long time, and definitely recommend City Grocery to anyone visiting Oxford.

I eat here semi-regularly when I'm craving lots of calories and traditional Southern comfort food! The prices are fair, the food tastes good and salty, and your grandma would enjoy it. However, it isn't the cleanest restaurant I've ever been to. Not sure about their selection of food for people with food allergies, etc. This place gets crowded, so be prepared for that. Also, they only let you separate checks 4 ways. Feels like a family-owned diner. I'd prefer this spot for lunch.

An evening meal at Oxford’s Bouré restaurant turned out to be a pleasant experience. The atmosphere was lively and servers were kept busy but still managed to be patient, friendly, informative and efficient. We can recommend the black bean hummus which was a plentiful appetiser for two; burgers were good and the jambalaya pasta very tasty. The ice cream is excellent whether served as a dessert accompaniment or on its own. Overall, good value for a pleasant experience & a reassuring one for coeliacs and those with particular dietary needs.

Big Bad Breakfast

Reviewed By Taylor B

When was the last time you had breakfast prepared by a James Beard Award winner? My wife and I heard a lot of positive things about Big Bad Breakfast and when we learned that the quaint breakfast/lunch eatery at 719 North Lamar Boulevard in Oxford, Mississippi, in the Mid Town Shopping Center, north of the historic Oxford Courthouse Square, was owned and operated by chef John Currence, who won the 2009 James Beard Foundation Award as Best Chef South while running his first restaurant, City Grocery on the Square, we knew we couldn't pass up an opportunity to sample the menu. Big Bad Breakfast specializes in house-cured tabasco-brown sugar bacon, crispy southern fried chicken, original Grit Girl grits, biscuits and Anson Mills steel cut oatmeal. Say no more. My wife had a Belgian waffle, a giant golden waffle topped with fried chicken and honey. She also had some house-cured bacon, toast and black coffee. I chose the Big Bad Breakfast skillet with three scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, onions, hash and cheddar cheese. With a fluffy black pepper buttermilk biscuit, a bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar and fresh strawberries and a big glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. Currence's breakfast concept is becoming very popular. He opened his Big Bad Breakfast in Oxford in 2008, then opened a location in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2013. He also has locations in Inlet Beach, Florida, Florence, Alabama, and Homewood, Alabama. In the future, he plans to open locations in Charleston, South Carolina, and Nashville, Tennessee. John, how about Chicago?
