Things to do in Newton
My wife and I were travelling East on I-80 when we decided we were in the mood for a JJ lunch. Found one in this small town just east of Des Moines. This was a great little break from the I-80 raceway. Of course, the sandwich was great, and freaky fast, with friendly folks running the place. But the real treat was just cruising the courthouse square for a little taste of Americana. Do yourself a favor if you're in this area around lunchtime - get off the dragstrip and take a laid back cruise around the town square to Jimmy John's. And while you're at it, cruise by one of the remaining operating Drive In Theaters west of town on county road F-48. You can hook back up to I-80 easily.

The Perkins in Newton IA is great, their customer service was exceptional! We were seated with out a wait, and our waitress Keeley was very attentive & informative. Keeley made sure we never ran out of our refreshments and our meal was served with minimal wait. My salad was fresh and delicious, my sandwich was a BLT and there was plenty of perfectly cooked bacon in it along with fresh tomato & lettuce. While we were waiting for our meal I decided I would also pick up some of the fresh bakery muffins, their buy 3 get 3 free deal is fantastic, the counter clerk was very helpful and efficient and rang up my order in perfect time to receive my meal.

They have been closed for some time while remodeling. Open again and better than ever. The cluttered look is gone. Very attractive traditional appearance. The food is excellent. I had a burger and onion rings. My wife had breakfast. Both wer very good and as ordered. Service was excellent and prices are reasonable. Give them a try.

I grew up in Iowa and took taverns (Maid-Rites) for granted. The loose meat sandwich without sauce is really not available in the rest of the United States. I was in town for RAGBRAI 2018 and had to have one! I love the seasoned loose meat with mustard.I miss these!

My fault for having expectations thinking this was a place where one could get homemade groceries. Chicken fried steak seemed like a frozen patty but wasn't bad and you could cut it with a fork which is good. Nothing I had was bad but it wasn't great. The price was fair. If you wanted green beans with your meal you had to come on the day they had green beans; it was corn on the day I was there. Service was very good, the staff was friendly and it was a clean and very popular with the locals. A scoop of ice cream came with the meal. In and out in about 35-40mins. I'd eat there again.

Welcome to The Ranch-the perfect place in Newton for pizza, family, and fun. We're serving up savory pizza, The Country's Best Chicken®, and crowd-pleasing Cactus Bread every day. Help yourself to the buffet, take your order to go, or have it delivered. N
A chain that's not a chain. Offers local favorites along with their standard fare. The salad dressings are I'm assuming is their take on the classics the ranch doesn't taste like your normal ranch as does the french dressing but its all good the only problem we had was we ordered a special order and it was a long time coming with people coming in after us getting theirs first.

â¢PJ's has a menu of made-to-order deli sandwiches and soups. You choose from a wide variety menu, are given a number, and your number is called-out, when your sandwich is ready. Tables and booths are set up with a long, large-windowed view of downtown Newton and the Jasper County Courthouse.â¢All ingredients are top-notch. Our personal favorite is the "super cheese," but all are DELICIOUS. We recommend getting a shot of vanilla flavor to be put into your cup for self-service available beverages.â¢Open 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. M-F, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturdays

Quick summary: very good steaks, well-priced. Service us friendly but could use more polish. Kitchen timing needs work.We were traveling through the area and had our taste buds ready for a good Midwestern steak for dinner. We were not disappointed here -- most cuts priced in the $20's, and come with two sides of your choice. We really appreciated that you could order different sizes of the same cut. The 6 oz filet ($23) was perfectly done, and I still gave some to my husband. There is also an 8 o'clock version for $26. The steaks were perfectly cooked as we asked. The sides are good. We ordered different styles of potato and side salads. My husband's Caesar was very good. My garden salad was good but underwhelming - mostly iceberg lettuce, a bit of purple cabbage and one slice of cucumber.Full bar with a range of wines by the glass, beers in cans and on tap.Friendly service, but see below about my thoughts.Very casual dining room with booths and tables. The vibe is log cabin meets ranch house.Due diligence: there were some issues.1. Most annoying, the mains came out 2 seconds after the salads hit the table. We did't even have time to put dressing on. This is a problem with timing in the kitchen, not the waitstaff. You really treat salads as you would other sides, and have everything hit the table St the same time?(A floor manager tried to blame a new, inexperienced waitress. No, this was a kitchen problem, not the waitress's lack of skill. This also means that steaks might have been pre-cooked to a certain point, as they came out so fast. Still, I have to admit that they were really delicious -- high quality meat, done to perfection.2. They serve cinnamon flavored butter with the dinner rolls. The sweetness does not go well with savories like steak and salad. Ask for regular butter.3. It would be good to train even the younger waitstaff on the fine points of the liquor offerings. Our server could not identify if there was an IPA on the craft beer menu. She had to verify that I was ordering wine when I asked for a glass of Cabernet. So -- if traveling, this is a great place if you hear a steak calling you. I'm sure they also do a good burger. But if you don't want your various meal courses to hit the table at the same time, you might have to give clear instructions about this.
