Hitchin' Post

Great breakfast, fast service, delightful waitress, great conversation too. We were in Malta on business, stopped at a west side US Highway 2 restaurant on June 6 for breakfast. After sitting for a half-hour and still no food (no, they weren't "slammed" with customers) we paid for coffee and left. Looked for the Hitching Post on east side of town on the highway immediately west of the large Milk River Pavilion building. You will drive past the small Hitching Post cafe (north side of the highway) if you are not watching for it. Very glad we stopped. A very friendly waitress met us, quickly took our order for two and served a well prepared breakfast, best bacon I've ate in months, great service and atmosphere. Great conversation with staff, smiles and laughs with quality food. Very affordable too for budget-minded travelers or people with families. Clean premises. Nothing better in Malta, Montana. Stop and enjoy the Hitching Post!

On our way from Havre to Williston, we stopped for lunch. The dining room is very nice. It is almost like eating in someone's private home. It has a nice fireplace and beautiful carpeting. Service was pretty good consisting that the waitress was taking care of the dining room and another area that had about 15 seniors for meals on wheels. The menu is pretty small for lunch and our food was just average. However, it is probably the best place to go in this small town.

Stretch's Pizza

Small-town Montana pizza, made with canned mushrooms, shouldn't be this good. But the crust is good, the cheese is stringy, the sauce is well-seasoned, and the toppings are generous. I ate at Stretch's two days in a row, thinking the first day must be a fluke....but it wasn't. No glam, for sure, just mouth-watering wonderfulness. My favorite: green olives and mushrooms. It's so good!

Most businesses were closed on July 4th but the Stockman was open for dinner and the special was their Super Burger, a half-pounder with 2 kinds of cheese and numerous other additions. Staff very friendly, service was efficient, and the meal was excellent. Will make sure to return on next visit to Malta.
