We ate here last night and were not disappointed. We arrive early and had beer and starters and then stayed in for dinner with another beer.I asked about a tasting flight and the gave us one of everything on tap to share. It was called âaround the worldâ and was only $10. I didnât see it on the menu so I asked if they had something like a flight and it was great. Our favourites were the Belgian Strong, the Res Ale and my wife loved their Baked Apple Cider.I had the Cajun wings which were just great! My wife had truffle fries which were ok. Later she had the Hummus tray which was really nice with the homemade flatbread and I had the pasta Alfredo with shrimp which was also good.

Spent one night in John Day and so glad we found this place. Has a nice bar area with craft beers. We had breakfast the next morning (opened at 7:30) really good omelet, fresh made mini-donuts hot fresh coffee and really good service. Shoutout to the female bartender who is also a special-Ed teacher. Fun night and super breakfast. We will be back

They don't usually serve breakfast, but thankfully, the Eclipse was in town!! The food was spectacular! Serving sizes were large enough for two people to share and the scrambled eggs...holy cow! Best ever! Biscuits were the fluffiest I've ever had and gravy was peppery and full of flavor. We will be back for dinner.

The Grubstake is a local institution: been around for decades, but unlike a vast array of other things in John Day, it ain't fossilized yet. Nope, they still serve up hefty half-pound burgers, and hot-out-of-the-fryer French fries (see photo). Don't miss their desserts: the dessert display case is smack dab in the middle of the eatery. Their beer selection doesn't match 1188's a few doors down, but they do have a few craft brews, as well as bottled beer for those of us are not finicky. Do dress code, so gentlemen needn't wear a coat and tie. A parka and wool scarf are recommended for January however. No need for reservations: we got immediate seating 16 hours before the total eclipse! The sign says "seafood" but I would stick with steaks an burgers; you can't go wrong with eastern Oregon beef. They also now serve breakfasts.

Right on the main Hwy. through town this place is a great choice at least for lunch stop. Clean, fast service, friendly staff with really great food. It has an outdoor deck in the rear over looking a small brook that runs behind the restaurant. Easy parking right out front we could watch our motorcycles as we ate lunch. I had soup and a crab melt both really great. Good price too and the deserts are made by locals in town. So you are getting your moms best pie/cakes. I got each for 2 days and I was in heaven. Carrot cake to die for. Must be a secret recipe.
