Our server was nice. It took quite a lot of time to get our salad, and it did not look very busy. Tons of flies everywhere, I had to kill about 4 of them near me so theyâd stop flying around. Probably wouldnât eat here again.

Popular with the locals. Part eatery, part good times spot. Simple setting with fresh food. Favorites are the catfish and the salad bar. Always friendly staff. Not open daily so be sure to check the hours before heading out. Lunch only on weekends.

Upon completion in 1984, our unique setting overlooking the Medina River Valley has been the premier restaurant and hotel location in Castroville. Now, our Texas Bistro plays host with a menu that reflects the revered culinary traditions of the Texas Hill
On a lovely Friday at noon we were almost the first customers to arrive, sitting out on the porch with a huge view of the whole valley. The waitress brought us menus, which turned out to be breakfast menus, although breakfast stopped at 10:00 (soon remedied with lunch menus). We found a number of tempting things. Everything started well with their homemade lemonade and fresh iced tea. The flies were bothersome. They were small and fast and buzzed around our glasses and food. We ate our whole meal with one hand waving in the air to keep the flies at bay. Clearly they donât know the following secret. Fill a baggie with clear water and hang it in the air. For example, in each space along the porch between the posts. Also above any open doorways to keep them from going inside. For whatever reason flies are afraid of what they see, and stay away. We go to an open air barbecue restaurant that hangs water baggies all around the perimeter and flies are no problem. Anyway, we ordered tacos with corn tortillas, but they came with flour tortillas. When we pointed that out, the waitress said the cook was in a bad mood and was giving the servers a hard time. Not my problem. My soup and salad that were delicious. When the waitress brought the glasses of wine, just upon arrival a fly dove into one of them, so she replaced it. Later, we found one in the iced tea. For dessert I ordered the bread pudding, of which I am a big fan. The waitress brought a bowl of banana pudding. I pointed out the problem, and she said thatâs what she was given. I sent it back. Then, a few minutes later she returned with a comment that finally the cook finally did something right. It was a large serving of hot bread pudding and it was excellent. So, all in all, the food was great, the setting was spectacular, the service a little weird and the flies bothersome. All of the difficulties could be remedied. I hope they do so, as this place has great potential and could easily deserve five stars. These kinds of problems come from lax management. We look forward to going back again.

I was not impressed. Sammyâs states that is a family tradition since 1958. The building outside looks ok. Inside it definitely is old. It needs some updates specially the tiles in the ceiling and wall paper around establishment. It is spacious with several sections including a bar area. It also states that bread and bakery items are made daily at the bakery across the street. The menu states they have apple fritters and hand made biscuits. We ordered both items and at 11 am they didnât have any. The breakfast tacos were good and tortillas were fresh. The bathrooms need updates also. Parking is free. I must say that around 1pm it was pretty full.

We were there around 5:30. Not very busy until about 6:00. Very friendly greeting when we went in. Since this was our first visit the manager explained the menu to us. An appreciated gesture. We placed our order, with a couple changes, like no onion, paid our bill and sat down. Our order number was called in a short time. Burgers and fries were served in a basket. They were hot and very tasty. Price was appropriate for value received. Easy access along Hwy 90 West. Plenty of parking. Dining area and restrooms were clean. We would eat here again.
