Our 23 Hectare private dam, and the surrounding wetland area, is home to hundreds of beautiful bird species, wildlife such as Duiker, Reed buck, Bush buck, Serval, Rooikat, porcupine and wild pigs to name a few.Beacon Vlei Guest Farm is a family friendly establishment centrally located on the famed Midlands Meander, and only 1 km from Michaelhouse School. The Midlands Meander offers visitors an abundance of art and craft shops. There are also many fine restaurants, delicatessens and cheese farms in the Balgowan district, within 3 to 5 km of Beacon Vlei.Fishing is one of the main activities at Beacon Vlei, the dam used to be one of Natals top Fly fishing dams, the Natal record (since been broken) Rainbow trout was caught in the dam in 1967 by a Michaelhouse boy. In 1987 the floods brought bass downstream which have since taken over. Bass up to the size of 3.5 kg’s have been caught in the dam. Fishing is free for guests provided you bring your own rods and tackle. We have numerous boats which are also free for guests to use for fishing or just for a row on the dam.We have 4 beautiful self catering cottages of varying size of which 3 have water frontage and amazing views across the valley; we also have two B&B rooms which are stunningly decorated. All cottages and rooms are equipped with the highest quality linen, bedding and mattresses to ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay with us. Then the “moos“ of Nguni cattle bring you back to the Natal farm landscape. Each AfriCamps tent consists of an outdoor wood-fired hot tub or splash pool, a spacious open plan lounge area with a comfortable couch, a dining area with a solid wooden table and seating for five guests, a fully-equipped kitchen, two bedrooms that comfortably sleeps five guests, and a bathroom complete with a hot shower, flushing toilet, and washbasin. Both bedrooms are furnished with a queen-size bed and have their own private entrance which allows maximum privacy. One of the bedrooms also contains a single bunk bed. Our tents are equipped with air-conditioning and an indoor fireplace. Enjoy a braai on our spacious wooden decks and take in the views from the comfortable deck loungers. Pull up the front covers and transform the tent into a large outdoor living area. Unwind and appreciate a festive family breakfast while taking in the serene natural beauty of the South African landscape. Our tents are equipped with Wi-Fi. The property is graced by the crystal clear Mpofana river which flows strongly through the farm. As part of a water scheme, the river also provides water to the farm. A hollowed-out section in the river is a great spot to go for a dip or enjoy the river from the banks by settling down for a picnic. Try your luck and catch yellowtail or trout – strictly catch and release. Guests can enjoy a 4 km walk through the indigenous forest where they will see the enormous 500-year-old Yellowwood tree, pass the river, the newly planted kiwi fields, and Nguni cattle. Take a stroll through the gorgeous rose gardens on the farm and settle down at a grassy picnic spot. The Midlands Meander route is popular for the relaxed atmosphere, picturesque countryside and welcoming people. Arum Hill Lodge B&B, situated on 7 hectares of property, is an exclusive B&B offering luxury accommodation in the heart of the Midlands. Gowan Valley Guest Farm is a family owned & manged B&B in the heart of the Natal Midlands. It is centrally situated within the popular Midlands Meander route and is 2,5kms from Michaelhouse School and 1.8kms from Orchards Wedding Venue. 4.5hrs drive from Johannesburg and just 1.5hrs from Durban. We offer a variety of rooms to choose from, all have their own en suites. There are 6 unique rooms in the thatched house, 2 rooms are attached to the River House and 5 large and spacious garden rooms. We can sleep 26 (+3) in total.
