Find out what South American restaurants to try in Cuenca. Writers and poets have long flourished in arts-oriented Cuenca, the country's third-largest city and the capital of the Azuay province. Cafes and galleries are tucked among the narrow cobblestone streets. The main plaza hosts both the old cathedral, started in 1557, the year the city was founded, and the blue-domed Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, dating to 1885. Locally made Panama hats get top billing at the markets, with centrally located Casa de la Mujer a shopping standout.

Voted Cuenca's best new restaurant in 2019, EAT is a delightfully hard to describe restaurant. It is really many restaurants in one. Monster sandwiches on homemade bread, like our famous meatloaf sandwich with melted cheese and crispy onions and our only
Meatloaf, Meatloaf sandwich, Rib sandwich. Lots more, but those are the items that keep bringing me back. They moved recently (Spring 2019) to their new location, which puts them side-by-side with several other good lunch restaurants, but this is still the one that pulls me back time and again. In fact, I have a lunch meeting there in a couple hours again today. :)

With more than 20 years of operation Villarosa its a Classic in Cuenca
Had dinner at Villa Rosa last night as I was yearning for some Italian food. The restaurant decor and layout was quite a surpirise as I wasn't expecting such elegance in such a location, but it was very tastefully and well done. The Staff, especially Jerry (the bar tender) were very helpful and professional.I ordered a bottle of white wine at $30.00 US (which was one of the cheapest) and the mixed seafood risotto (about $20.00 US) I was served 3 slices of bread with great garlic butter then the wine while waiting (which was nice and cold). The risotto was very good and served at the right temperature, (better than I would have expected anywhere in Ecuador).Chocolate cake with ice cream and a glass of Hennesy @ $20.00 US) to top it off, YIKES!!! Yes an expensive meal but as they say here in Ecuador, you can expect to double your bill if you have alcohol!!Overall a great and tipsy experience!!

Cristo del Consuelo keeps the classical flavors from the traditions of the city and the family recipies. In our colofour restaurant you will try the best flavors of the tradicional ingredients in a perfect mix.
A resturaunt full of flavour and a feel of local Cuencano style, the food is a little different to what western people are used to eating but still delicious, with lots of pork, chicken and mote nice sauce and salad its everything you need.

Great food, welcoming staff and a beautiful garden with humming birds. We were lucky enough to go twice to Corvel during our stay in Cuenca. Once with friends for a long Sunday lunch and prior to that on a gastronomic tour with Chef Patricio including a visit to their community herb farm and a cooking class at Corvel including a fabulous prawn quinotto (risotto with quinoa instead) and chicken cooked in cream and ground roasted pumpkin seeds) - delicious! The 45min trip to and from Paute is through scenic countryside and the little town itself is nice to walk around and is near the river. We hired a van and driver to take the 10 of us. Hang gliding for $50 offered nearby.

The lunch set at Moliendo was delicious, filling and at $2.50 was an incredible bargain. They also have dinner menus priced at $3.50, which we did not try. The owner was very friendly and courteous. The salsa on the table was spicy bit very flavorful! A great place to sample colombian fare!
