'Fasting Food' has no meat and is usually available on Wednesdays and Fridays...the Orthodox Christian fast days. It is on most menus in tourist restaurants. Basically, it is several 'wats' or vegetable sauces served on injera. Lentils feature prominently. The dish is known as 'atkilt bayinetu'. You must try it...not unlike an Indian thali.
I had my first at the Africa Hotel. It was good. But I had better subsequently. Service was friendly and attentive.

We went to the Remhai for dinner on our first night. It was dreadful. There were only two other tables occupied in the large dining room and despite the fact there were more staff than diners, it took forever to be served. While waiting for our meal we overheard another couple sending back their meal saying the meat was so overcooked it was impossible to cut. Unfortunately, I had opted for veal and it was almost inedible. My friends had pasta and it was equally unappealing - overcooked with a tomato sauce and littled overcooked meatballs. The nex day we started talking with some people who were staying at the Remhai. They reported a similar experience at the restaurant.

My pasta dish was nice that we had at the restaurant. We decided to share a bottle of Kamilla wine as the South African wine we wanted was out of stock. It was off, so obviously choose the beer and not the Ethiopian wine if sold out.
The dip and bread was nice that was served as a starter. The service was good. Not up to the standard at the Goha but it was a nice Terrace and not too badly priced. Another person ordered a continental meat dish and they enjoyed that as well.

I had a LOT of the vego fasting plates whilst in Ethiopia and this was easily one of the best! Lots of variety on the platter and a great mix of spicy and mild! Def recommend!

Our experience at AB was excellent. While pricier than some of the other places on the main drag, this was the only place that inspired us to actually enter and order. Traditional setting, traditional food, nothing fancy, but a very welcome respite after some terrible meals elsewhere (avoid the restaurant at the Consolar Hotel at all costs!)

I came across with Aksum Classical Restaurant while walking on the quiet main street of Axum wondering where to have dinner. It serves diversified menu with reasonable price. I have enjoyed my dinner looking the main street from the open balcony of the Restaurant.

Local traditional restaurant with very good tibs and fasting firfir. The setting is traditional and the restaurant show its appreciation for the former prime minister with art picturing him and some of the high clerics of the ethiopian orthodox church. The small enterance is a little hard to find, but inside there is a lot of room!

I spend a week in Axum and ended up eating here almost everyday. If you have had enough of shire and injera, i would highly recommend this place as they make fantastic burgers! Even the veggie burger was really good!! Also, the omelet+juice combo was the perfect breakfast for me every morning. If you find restaurant with better food and nicer surroundings, please let me know.. :)
