Walked up the valley mid October after the first snows had fallen but some had melted and the road was clear for walking. Left the car at the last bus stop and walked just under 2 hours up to the hut. Some of the road was pretty steep but the trek was worth it. Once up there at the base of the mountain we had a wonderful view of the entire area. The stop in the hut was perfect. Wild soup was the best ever. Cheese spaetzle, and polenta with Bergkaese melted over it was just what we needed. Plus some hot chocolate to boot. All of this served promptly while sitting out looking over the valley. The stroll back down was that much easier having had a pleasant and perfect lunch. And the prices couldn't be beat either.

Really enjoyed our lunch on the terrace. Service is good and also swift. Not a very large selection, but more than adequate. I had the goulash canederli (dumplings) which were very tasty and it was an enourmous serving. No need for anything, although we did end up sharing a strudel which was also very good (recomended)

The first night of our one week in St Jakob in Defereggen, we decided to try the first restaurant entering the village, second house on the left. A splendid welcome, we were treated to a small appetizer, on the house. The brilliant service went on, although the place was getting quite crowded as the evening went by. They have a good menu, with an emphasis on local and traditional. I couldn't resist the fried liver, and it was excellent, as were my wife's lamb cutlets. Being picky, there could have been a slightly wider selection on wines. However, price considered, you are unlikely to find much better than this. Having said that, let's see what the next 6 nights bring along...

This is a wonderful place where a lot of locals also eat. The service is very friendly and the food freshly cooked and very tasty. I had the "Hirsch Kalbs Schnitzel" filled with ham and camenbert together with a fresh salad.....delicious !

In Val Defereggen sulla strada a poche centinaia di metri da St. Jacob un hotel con ristorante moderno. Ristorante curato, piatti elaborati (ma troppo salati). Servizio veloce e cortese. Prezzi poco sopra la media (cari acqua e vini).

We had coffee here twice and that is absolutely a plus. Staf is friendly. Had no food so can not comment on that

Veramente gradevole sia l'accoglienza (e non é un particolare trascurabile) che la cucina ed il contesto.Ottima la zuppa di rafano e la salsa di cren panna e mele.Meno lo strudel di ricotta....un po' acido.Comunque consigliato.

Restaurant with beer garden with great waterfall view, our products are sourced from local and Austrian manufacturers.
I can see that all the other reviews here are in another language, so hopefully this will be helpful to english speakers. First and foremost: you must go here!!! This restaurant provided us with one of the best meals we had in the whole of our three month European trip! It is run by a lovely couple, and the staff are dressed in traditional Austrian clothing with not a hint of irony. The whole place is filled with locals, who come to watch the football and have a pint in the bar, or have a meal in the peaceful dining room. Yet, everyone speaks English and they were not at all unkind about our inability to speak German. But the best part is the food! Tirolean food is an interesting hybrid of Austrian, German and Italian fare - you will find a lot of pasta set beside sausage dishes and a lot of cheese! It is to die for. If you come here, you have to pre-order the fondue a day in advance, and you wont regret it! It includes the meat which you cook in a heavenly broth, home-made dipping sauces, chips, salad and garlic bread! It is a feast for two if I ever saw one. Oh, and leave some room for dessert, because they have some really delicious ice creams - try palatschinke, a traditional dish with a pancake and ice cream. Do note that the fare is a little expensive - about 20 euros per person for the fondue. But this is usual, and it is worth it!
