Even though not a typical Japanese Onsen style accommodation, the modern facility and seasonal Japanese western style cuisine welcome to make your body and soul warm with excellent staffs and a hot spring bath. One of my favorite hotels is this in Hakone.

True relaxation that has been improved through the changing times. A resort hotel with a healing experience and a view of Lake Ashi. As a classic and authentic resort hotel in Hakone, we have improved our hospitality for a long time at this beautiful natural scene.
The location of this hotel is fantastic. It is just a few minutes walk to the Hakone shrine and tori gate on the water and about 15 minutes walk to the town by the water. From the town you can catch the pirate ship or ferry to the base of the cable car and head up the mountain to other attractions. The hotel grounds are lovely and full of pathways lined with Rhododendrum. The rooms are a great size and all have a view of the lake. I stayed on the third floor and in my opinion rooms on the third and fourth floors have a better view but the second floor rooms have a balcony and the first floor rooms have patios. The hotel provides yukatas and all toiletries you might need. The hotel onsen is small but nice and also has an outdoor bath. The hotel spa is very relaxing with a variety of services. I did not have dinner at the property but breakfast was very good. Every staff member I encountered was extremely professional, courteous and friendly. My only complaint is the mattress was very firm and I prefer some thing softer but that is a personal preference.

It was a rainy day in Hakone, the last day of my trip. I did not like the idea of being outside juggling my luggage and umbrella so I found a lovely refuge at the Fujiya Hotel. Being a Saturday the restaurants had a long wait for the table, so I went to the tea lounge. The waiter was kind enough to wipe my wet luggage after showing me to my seat. Although I was not a staying guest I felt they gave excellent service. Next time I would like to stay. The rooms look beautiful, and the surroundings are steeped in history. Access is convenient from Hakoneyumoto station. About 15 minutes bus ride, and the stop is right in front of the hotel.

Located in the Hakone Sengokuhara region. Original French cuisine and first-class hospitality. The Hakone Highland Hotel used to be a former residence of a baron, quietly nestled in a beautiful forest. You can enjoy a high-level resort with only a short trip to Hakone. The gentle twitter of wild birds. The chattering of wind and river carrying across the treetops. These simple charms will bring peace of mind to anyone.
Stayed here for 1 night, staff were helpful in guiding us to our room after check-in. Room were very big, and there was an in-room private onsen. However, the room was not very clean as I found pee stains on toilet bowl cover and basin area. The shower area is open see through glass overlooking the outdoor private onsen and forest (my husband and I were skeptical if anyone would walk by since we were not told if it is a enclosed forest). It was a relatively quiet hotel when we check-in and check-out. Reception staff were non-english speaking hence they could not help us when we seek help on an emergency issue. Overall experience could be better.

Welcome to Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu, a true sanctuary facing magnificent mountain in Hakone, away from your bustling city life. The concept of our ryokan is the harmony of authentic Japanese hospitality and the nature. You can watch the sunrising sky while bathing in our enormous open-air onsen with infinite horizon view. In addition, all rooms come with its own private open-air bath. In the evening, get excited for the beautifully presented delicious Japanese cuisine at your table. Enjoy the heavenly experience of the true Japanese service throughout your stay. Hakone Open-Air Museum and Hakone Gora Park is only 6-minute bus ride from Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu. Chisuji Falls is 13-minute walk away, and Owakudani Valley is 2.3 km away.
I stayed at a Superior Room with Open-air Bath. The room was spacious and immaculately clean. The description said it had 2 single beds, but each bed could fit 2 and the entire room could probably easily fit 4 people. It even had a sort of living room between the bed and the balcony, where people could hang out and roll around, or use it as a space to open up all their luggage. The chairs weren't that comfortable though. The floor-to-ceiling window and the balcony view was *refreshing* to look at as you wake up in the morning or as you sit on the balcony and drink your complimentary coffee/tea. (Make sure to request a high enough room for a relaxing mountain view). The toilet and the shower were separate. The shower was the standard Japanese small size, but that really isn't an issue if you will be using the public onsen anyway. The private bathtub is nice for people who want to experience the onsen water but don't want to get naked in the public onsen. Though, when you are in the bathtub, there isn't much of a view from where you are (it's blocked by the railing), and, to be honest, it's not worth the money staying here and not going into the public onsen. It's nice though for couples who would want to dip in a bath together (could comfortably fit 2 Asian-sized couples). I would say the highlight of the place are the 2 outdoor/open-air public onsen. The 6F one has a nice infinity pool view, where you can relax and stare at the mountains in the distance (it's especially nice during the autumn season), and the 5F one offers a calming waterfall sound in the background. I recommend checking the sunrise times, then waking up early and being at the 6F onsen just in time for the sunrise (make sure it is open to your gender!). If you don't want to be naked outdoors though, both public onsen still have the regular indoor pools with windows also looking out into the trees (also, the water is hotter indoors). But I think it's wasted money if you come here and *not* experience the outdoor baths. My stay included a breakfast at the hotel's own restaurant on the 5th floor. It was the traditional Japanese breakfast (the main dish was fish and rice, and a lot of other small vegetable dishes, salad, and desserts). It was all pretty to look at and you could tell the amount of effort that went into the presentation. If you are not fond of the traditional Japanese breakfast, you might want to inquire at the hotel for other options (there were no other options for me though as it was a special package that already included the breakfast). After you had your breakfast, go to the 5th floor to have some freshly brewed coffee (from a machine) and hang out at the patio surrounding the 5F reception. The view of the trees is relaxing as you consider and plan the activities for the rest of your day. Aside from the 2 public onsen, the garden, and the bar/lounge, there's not much to do here or in the surrounding area. It is a bit far off from the rest of the places-to-see in Hakone. They do offer a free shuttle to take you to/from Gora/強羅駅, but if you are the type that likes to walk around and explore the area, then it's not as convenient. I suggest coming here and checking-in, only after already doing a long day of exploring Hakone. Rest for the night, take 2-3 baths, have a massage at the spa, have drinks in your room or at the bar, recharge, relax, then checking-out the next day to resume your adventures.

Stayed at this hotel during COVID 19 period so the service provided was minimal - no room service, self-service of futon and bed-making. Our room has excellent view facing Mt Fuji, spacious for two people, although a bit old but clean. The onsen was great.
